This week: a parade, a long kayak trip and a journey down a rabbit hole

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and a parade is happening this morning downtown. Stay warm, paraders!

Lucas Will will talk about his 97 day kayaking trip around Lake Superior at Duluth Pack on Tuesday.

The Duluth Playhouse Children’s Theatre opens Alice in Wonderland at the Marshall School Auditorium on Thursday and it runs through Sunday.

There’s a variety show for the benefit of local theater legend Liz Larson in Lincoln Park on Saturday.

The Fusion Belly Dance Show on Saturday at Teatro Zuccone features a variety of styles – steampunk, Bollywood, gothic, tribal, and more.

Playwright John Patrick Shanely will be speaking at St. Scholastica on Sunday.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!

Berserkon is back!

Berserkon failed to make it’s initial Kickstarter goal of $42K, but it gained a lot of attention, a major grant from Visit Duluth, and learned a thing or two about what people are looking for from a major gaming convention. It’s back with a much more manageable $9,950 basic goal and stretch goals that will add to the fun.

If you pledged the first time, that’s erased. To support this project, roll again!

The Subjectivity Spill

The UMD Anomalies Dept. dispatched two Morphogenetic Field Technicians to Professor Marrow’s hillside home, surveying the contamination from a novel form of radiation.

Awesome Fest and Bad Fashion Party call for volunteers, etc.

Awesome Fest and the sixth annual Bad Fashion Ski Party at Mont du Lac are coming up Feb. 1-3, hosted by the KinkHos Telemark Ski Gang. The music and Bad Fashion Party are free; discounted three-day lift tickets are available for skiers. There will be telemark, alpine and snowboard events all weekend. Ten bands are playing. We’re looking for sponsors, volunteers, participants and a decent PA system. “It’s your turn to be awesome,” and “you have to be awesome.”

Call for participants and UMD Creative Writers: Story Telling Project

In conjunction with local organizations (such as United Cerebral Palsy Duluth) and group homes, the Storytelling Project will match UMD writing students with people in the community who have mental and/or physical disabilities from Cerebral Palsy.

A good place to have snow tires put on?

I know I’m late — tires are off the wheels, so need mounting/balancing … thanks!

Found dog

Found this dog running loose on Sixth Street and 11th Avenue East at about 1pm today. Male, no collar. We caught him, called the cops and he got hauled away to the animal shelter. Sorry, Mr. Husky! I hope someone picks him up soon. Super handsome dog, mouthy and full of energy. We would’ve kept him for the weekend but he was too big a handful.

Tiffany Tarrolly and Pageant Police

Former Northland’s NewsCenter reporter Tiffany Tarrolly’s new project is called “Pageant Police,” a video series critiquing the physical beauty of contestants in the 2013 Miss USA pageant.

(This post originally contained an embedded video of the “Miss Maryland USA 2013 Critique.” We have removed the video in the interest of not giving it any more attention.)

The concept of the series is essentially to say mean things about the physical appearance of women who are in pageants. So anyone annoyed by women who are in pageants can experience something worse: women who say mean things about women who are in pageants.

The only thing more annoying would be me, for posting this, but I’ll soon be eclipsed in the annoying rankings by everyone who watches this video and then comments on it.

Wicked North Shore Icicles

Former Duluthian here, now a couple of hours further up the shore. My coworker (at the Cook County Visitors Bureau) snapped this photo in the Grand Marais harbor earlier this week. Too awesome to not share.

With four colleges in this town, this seems a viable business idea.

Does anyone know anything about the FEMA trailers supposedly hanging out back in the woods a couple miles before you hit Two Harbors?
