PDD Gift Guide 2016

reindeergiftguidebig2016
Sleigh bells and cash registers are ringing. The season of religious ceremony and competitive consumerism is upon us. As usual, Perfect Duluth Day has compiled a list of gift ideas with a Twin Ports connection, so we can put those North Pole elves out of work and keep our local businesses and crafters fat and jolly. Featured here are 15 items produced by the hands and brains of your neighbors. If you have more ideas or are a business with a local offering, please add it in the comments and expand our virtual catalog.

Duluth beer drinkers have more choices than ever — not just in terms of brands and styles, but also in packaging. A variety of new bottle and can styles have entered the local market, and more are on the way.

Two prominent examples are the 750ml bottles Fitger’s Brewhouse used to package its late-winter series, and the 16 oz. cans Castle Danger Brewery will soon release for its seasonal offerings.

’Tis the season for the seventh annual PDD Gift Guide — a list of holiday gift ideas with a local connection. We present 15 ideas to get things started, and invite everyone to add their own suggestions and links in the comments below.

John Vachon’s Duluth Milk Company Photos

Child drinking milk

MPR News did a series of stories on John Vachon earlier this year, which was noted at the time on PDD along with a Duluth Milk Company photo. Today we present the rest of the Duluth Milk Company photos and a link to the lot of 61 Duluth images Vachon shot in August of 1941, from the collection of 170,000 photographs from 1935 to 1945 created by the United States Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information.

Tim Kaiser Inferior Planets Double 7″ EP Crowdfunding

Tim Kaiser is releasing a Double seven-inch EP on vinyl this Spring and is doing an Indiegogo fundraiser. Why a double seven-inch and not a full-length LP? Because the music is done in such a way that you can play more than one of the four sides at the same time! Crazy! Big thank you to Lakefront Films for shooting the video.

PDD Gift Guide 2014

Ho ho ho, it’s time once again for the Perfect Duluth Day Gift Guide. A holiday hootenanny of gift ideas with a local connection. With the new-ish PDD design, the appearance is a little different this year. Click the thumbnail photo for more details on products. The titles link to e-commerce sites or info about where to find the products. We’ve gathered 15 ideas to kick things off, and invite you to add your suggestions in the comments.

If you’d like, you can refer to Gift Guides of Christmases Past. We have tried to clean up dead links and missing images in these old posts, but you might still find a couple.

PDD Gift Guide 2013

Get your commerce on. Here is PDD’s annual reminder that the real purpose of Christmas is to obtain material things … as long as they are locally made.

This being the fifth year of the PDD Gift Guide, most of you know the drill by now, but for uninitiated newbies the concept is simple: The folks behind the curtain at PDD select 15 locally-based holiday gift ideas. The community at large is free to add other suggestions and links in the comment section below, with some effort to not be too redundant and repeat items from the Gift Guides of Christmases Past.

PDD Gift Guide 2012

For the past few years, we at Perfect Duluth Day have pointed out gift options produced by the locals — from durable goods made by the region’s top manufacturers to cute little bags of cookies from the corner bakery. We feature 15 lovely items and encourage the PDD community to add to the ideas in the comments.

We never repeat items from previous years, by the way, so it’s no waste of your time to get all nostalgic and peruse Gift Guides of Christmases Past.

Here it is, the annual gallery of local goods, submitted for your holiday shopping approval. If you’re going to get all material this Christmas, it might as well be local material, right?

In most cases you can acquire these items in retail stores or shop online. Click on the images for more information and links.

Cribbage at the Walker Art Center

The last time I ate at the Burrito Union, I had no idea they hosted a cribbage tournament. If I’d known, I would have bought a Starfire Pale Ale and signed up. I don’t live in Duluth anymore, but I’d like to play some crib with Duluthians (and even our neighbors in Superior).

I’d also like to invite everyone to a fantastic event at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis — on Saturday, August 20, the Walker’s Open Field program is collaborating with me on an event called Cribbage in the Field.

Hell has frozen over, Eric Dubnicka has a blog!

Inspired by a previous post, and feeling a desperate need for external validation, I figured it’s about time to formally introduce my blog to the PDD community.

ericdubnicka.com

An angst-ridden New Years drove me to finally get a website going, and shockingly, I update it with new artwork near daily, commentary and links to art, design and oddities that I’ve come across.  It’s a work in progress and I encourage any comments and suggestions you may have.

PDD Gift Guide 2010

One way to feel good about taking part in the hyper consumerism of the holiday season is to shop locally. That’s why your pals at Perfect Duluth Day have again compiled a gallery of gifts produced by the hands and brains of your friends and neighbors. Click on the pics for details about each item.

Just like the 2009 guide, the fabulous showcase below is by no means comprehensive. List your own suggestions in the comments.

Introducing the Everyday Duluth 2011 photo calendar by Naomi Yaeger-Bischoff

June top collage page from Everyday Duluth Calendar 2011

Hi, Naomi Yaeger-Bischoff here. It’s soon holiday gift-giving season, and also the time of year to get calendars for next year, so it’s time for me to put an official post on Perfect Duluth Day about a personal project I put together to showcase my photography, the Everyday Duluth calendar. (You could say this is a shameless plug.)

Here is the story behind the calendar.
