Summer 2026 Voyageurs National Park Critters Montage
A cast of elusive forest creatures scamper into view in the latest montage of trail-camera footage from Voyageurs National Park.
The Voyageurs Wolf Project has roughly 400 cameras set up in the park, which is about 100 miles north of Duluth.
Death of a Piano
The 2026 documentary Death of a Piano follows four years of Duluth’s SubSuperior Underwater Music and Art Festival. It features Troy Rogers and numerous other artists as they construct and experiment with Hexas — a modular, reconfigurable platform constructed from five-foot hexagonal floating docks for the purpose of serving as a rogue stage on Duluth’s waterfront. A discarded piano emerges as a central character as festival participants decide how to conduct a proper sendoff.

Dog Water Rescue Emergency
Video from the Oct. 2 rescue in the Duluth Ship Canal after a dog jumped onto and over the pier wall into the water. The United States Coast Guard, Duluth Fire Department, St. Louis County Sheriff’s rescue boat and Duluth Fire Boat Marine 19 all responded.
Meanwhile, the bulk carrier Algoma Niagara waited to depart through the canal. (more…)

Part two of the Minnesota Bricks series mapping the original route of the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad passes through hilltops overlooking the dalles of the St. Louis River near Oldenburg Point at Jay Cooke State Park, at times following Minnesota State Highway 210 but also passing through wooded terrain where numerous trestles once bridged the route over ravines.

Video Archive: Meierhoff Building Circa 1967
This late-1960s film offers an inside look at the Meierhoff Building at 325 S. Lake Ave. in Duluth’s Canal Park. The building is presently known as the Waterfront Plaza and houses the Suites Hotel and numerous condos. It was constructed in 1889 for the Marshall-Wells Hardware Company, one of the world’s largest hardware wholesalers. Marshall-Wells was sold and closed in 1958. The building sat vacant until Marvin W. Meierhoff acquired it in 1966. (more…)

Duluth native Emily Haavik and her band perform “Wingspan” live at Icehouse in Minneapolis. The video was shot in April by Carly Danek. The audio mix is by Duluth native Dave Mehling, who is also playing keys.

Charlie Parr has a new album, Rooming House, set for release Oct. 16. Comprised of seven songs, the conceptual narrative draws listeners into the lives of ordinary people navigating hardship and finding strength within a fragile-yet-vital sense of community. The video for the title track is animated and illustrated by Drew Christie.

Drop Dead Gorgeous: Miss Duluth
The 1999 mockumentary film Drop Dead Gorgeous hit theaters July 23, 1999 — 27 years ago today. It includes a very brief reference to Duluth, which is in the short embedded clip above.
Actress Kari Ann Shiff, in the role of Miss Duluth, gets about three seconds of screen time, shortly after the line, “C’mon Miss Forest Lake, get that stick out of your ass or I will.” (more…)
The Last Log Drive in Minnesota
The last log drive in Minnesota was filmed on the Little Fork River, about 100 miles northwest of Duluth, during the spring of 1937. The scenes were captured by Carl H. Henrikson Jr. during the drive. In the mid-1970s, the Minnesota Historical Society hired TCR Productions to compile a documentary film using Henrikson’s footage, along with recorded commentary and narration. A new version, embedded above, is digitized from Henrikson’s original 1937 reels and recut to match the completed film.
