Pumpkin Patch near Duluth
We have a little one that we would like to take to a pumpkin patch this year. Since we just recently moved to Duluth, we have no idea where to go. Anyone know of any good pumpkin patches nearby? We’d prefer a pick-your-own-out-in-the-patch sort of place, but hey, beggers can’t be choosers.
Historic Lift Bridge featured on Shorpy
Here is a really neat photo looking back into the history of Duluth. The first version of our beloved Lift Bridge didn’t really lift at all. It initially was built in 1905 as a very rare transporter bridge. It wasn’t until 1930 that it was converted into the form we know today.

Night Without a Home Sleepout and Fundraiser at Wade Stadium
Saturday, Oct. 9
Hundreds of area residents will be sleeping outside Saturday, Oct. 9, at Wade Stadium in an effort to raise donations to aid the homeless in our community.
Night Without a Home Sleep Out and Fundraiser will include a homelessness demo along with music and many great speakers. Funds and items collected by participants will benefit the more than 500 homeless in our community at the Project Homeless Connect event to be held at the Washington Center on Oct. 28.
A Night Without a Home asks participants not just to learn about homelessness but to be part of the solution to raise awareness of homelessness in our own community by sleeping outside for a night. The event is also intended to raise donations that will help those in our community who don’t yet have the option of a warm bed. Participants will be joined by a group of speakers featuring residents who have experienced homelessness, faith leaders, and community leaders.

The Rentola
Here are two historic photos of the Rentola, a Finnish boarding house at 4 N. 59th Ave. W., in West Duluth. The top photo is from Karl Hagglund, whose grandmother was a maid at the Rentola. The next photo is from 1961, courtesy of the Northeast Minnesota Historical Center. So the story goes, there was an old steam house nearby where Rentola residents took saunas. (more…)
