Watching the Twins

Actually, I was kind of serious. We got no cable, and the American League games, all of them, are on TBS. Totally bites. Even the ALCS isn’t available for us Luddites. And, no, there are no options for friends with cable. So, if I am forced to go public with my Twins devotion, my bandwagon hopping on, where do PDDers suggest I go without feeling like I have to buy a beer every inning — though that may be fun on a Friday. Looking for low-key, non-sports bar setting. Possible?

Afghanistan Memorial Candlelit Vigil

Afghanistan Memorial Vigil – Remembering those silenced

A candlelit vigil and march to mark the ninth year of the continuing war and conflict in Afghanistan sponsored by the Northland Anti-War Coalition and CSS Center For Justice Living.

Beginning in the Duluth Rose Garden near Leif Erikson Park, the night will start with words from local religious leaders. Following this we will march down the Lakewalk to place a memorial, in remembrance of the Afghan civilians and Coalition soldiers who have died, between the Korean War and Vietnam War Memorials.  Here we will be led in song by Sara Thomsen and have a moment of silence.

This is a time for everyone to join together to remember those that have died in the ongoing war outside of any partisan conflict or ideological struggle.

NOTE: Please bring photos, flowers, or other items to place at the memorial if you would like.

Really Really Free Market

This Sunday in Lincoln Park there is to be the first (that i know of) Really Really Free Market in Duluth.  What is a Really Really Free Market you may ask? Well, from what I’ve gathered off the all mighty intra-nert, it’s a time and a place where people can get together to share things without being encumbered by money in all its forms.  Things such as material objects, musical jams sessions, puppet theatre, skill-sharing and playshops (like hair cuts, massage therapy, dance lessons, automotive knowledge, cooking classes), pot-luck lunches and food shelves, all are freely distributed to anyone who wants it. Anything you can think of that someone else may need.  All for FREE!!

Training for Change 11/12-14

From the Burmese jungle to coal mining towns in West Virginia, Training for Change (TFC) has for decades worked alongside grassroots activists to help them build more effective movements. This November 12-14, TFC is bringing its popular Training for Social Action Trainers (TSAT) to Duluth.

The TSAT is meant for activists, educators and organizers of all stripes who want to take their movement-building skills to a new level. Using experiential tools and small group discussion, the TSAT covers everything from workshop design to confronting racism. I highly recommend this training… but space is limited and filling quickly.

The fee is on a sliding scale ($150-$300) and includes all meals. Please don’t let cost be an obstacle: scholarships are available. Check out the Training for Change website for more details and to register.

If today is your birthday …

Increased personal magnetism and charisma are not with you this year. Relationships are not very stimulating and a focal point for you and your pets. Creative endeavors are likely to suck. New responsibilities and duties are part of your life this year, and at times you can feel a little burdened by them, get over it! However, you can benefit greatly from the increased doses of vitamins needed to keep you alive, as you are an old person now.

Today’s birthdays include:
Thomas Wolfe
Gore Vidal
Chubby Checker
Ashlee Simpson
and … Mr. DeafYet — AKA — Big ‘old’ House Bob.

This guy likes to show off his junk

At 5:23 p.m. Saturday I was driving west along Grand Avenue and had to stop for a red light at Central Avenue. A tall, bald guy in a red jacket and black pants started walking across the crosswalk, then stopped and turned to look at the young lady sitting in the car in front of me. He reached for his belt … and … well … what follows is my thought pattern from there.

Pumpkin Patch near Duluth

We have a little one that we would like to take to a pumpkin patch this year. Since we just recently moved to Duluth, we have no idea where to go.  Anyone know of any good pumpkin patches nearby? We’d prefer a pick-your-own-out-in-the-patch sort of place, but hey, beggers can’t be choosers.

Historic Lift Bridge featured on Shorpy

Here is a really neat photo looking back into the history of Duluth. The first version of our beloved Lift Bridge didn’t really lift at all. It initially was built in 1905 as a very rare transporter bridge.  It wasn’t until 1930 that it was converted into the form we know today.
