Power and Control Wheel
October is nationally recognized as violence against woman awareness month. In honor of this I attended a presentation about physical violence against women, more particularly about a women’s shelter here in Duluth called Safe Haven. The shelter works with men, women, and children involved in abusive relationships. Safe Haven provides a safety net which allows women caught up in abusive relationships to come and stay at the shelter, hopefully allowing them the time they need in order to try and settle themselves as individuals. Specifically they give these women a place to stay and time to figure out what it is they want to do.
Various support groups help them realize the situation they are in and give them the chance to relate with other women who are going through similar circumstances. The shelter offers women looking for help up to thirty days to figure out what it is they want to do, this is not necessarily a time limit because the shelter is willing to make exceptions for women who need more time and are seriously committed to change.

Nice trip down memory lane with some snapshots of Young at Heart Records from 1996 and recollections to fill them out. The pictures themselves are just snapshots, as I said, but upon close examination they do capture the feel and the spirit of that place nicely. I just wish there were more of them. Last Place of Commerce
I miss the days when the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce headquarters was next to the Last Place on Earth. That was synergy at its finest.
The photo above is from roughly 1993 1996. Last Place hadn’t quite finished moving in. I think the two were neighbors for at least 10 years before the chamber hightailed it to First Street.

The 2010 Taste of Hermantown is set for Thursday, Oct. 21 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Shrine Building (5152 Miller Trunk Highway). Admission is $15 or free for children 10 and under. All proceeds benefit the Hermantown Community Fund, an affiliate of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. LCD Projector Recomendation
I’m thinking about getting an LCD projector for work. It needs to be portable, but not compact – I don’t plan on taking it on a plane. My application is primarily marketing presentations, not heavy on video or high end graphics. I’ll be using it about twice a month. Any recommendations for makes, models or vendors?
Partridge and life as we know it
Right on time, the partridge are back in my crab apple tree. They have been here ever since I moved in. They move to my feeder come winter (I put out cracked corn for them) and beat a path through the snow (I can see their little heads poking up above their snow-bank path as they come, which gets taller as winter progresses). I love it that some things never change.
One day, years ago, I went out to my rental cabin to clean and noticed white poop everywhere. I mean everywhere! (I didn’t go out to clean for days in between rentals.) I looked around and saw a little window broken out, (actually in). So I looked closer, and saw a partridge sitting on the sofa. We blinked at each other. He let me pick him up, and set him free outside. Me and his prodigy have been friends ever since.
Selling antique bedroom set — not sure how to price it
I have a three-piece antique bedroom set that I’m looking to sell. I have no idea on the value or where to even start with the price. Its got to be 95+ years old — it was my great grandmother’s. Set includes: full-size bed frame, dresser with mirror, and armoire. Can anyone help?
Circles of Giving — Saturday, Nov. 6
It’s like a big garage sale, but everything is free.
If you’ve got a quality item you’d like to give away, drop it off at the Valley Youth Center in West Duluth before Nov. 4. You can drop items off Monday through Friday from 12 to 6 p.m.
The items are sorted for display, and people take what they need at no cost during the Circles of Giving event on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Valley Youth Center is located in Laura MacArthur School at the south entrance, by the playground.

Superior has disc golf in Central Park
A new disc-golf course opened in Superior last week. It’s in Central Park, about one mile east of the UWS campus.
Other courses in the area include:

- Miller Creek (by Lake Superior College)

The Infamous Dr. Thunder paints a mural on the back door of Who’s Bar in Superior
Erik Pearson put down the gray base today for a mural over Who’s Bar’s back door. You wouldn’t believe how frequently used that door is, and how ignored the sign on the inside instructing people to knock before exiting went. Fortunately, Pearson’s quick hands managed to prevent any disasters.
Last week he painted the mural below, which is the back door of an unoccupied space between Who’s Bar and the Palace Bar. Go Dr. Thunder! Go!
Duluth-area gluten-free options
I just discovered Bulldog Pizza has added some great gluten-free options! Pizza, appetizers, sandwiches, and salads. So now people who are gluten sensitive have an even wider array of places to go.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the untimely death last night of Cathy Curley – founder of Safe Haven, the Lake Superior Regional Justice Center, domestic violence prevention and intervention pioneer, community activist, mother, friend, mentor, lover of life.
Was SMDC name change Essential?
I just saw a piece on NBC about how Gap changed its logo and then changed back to the original after a whole lot of internet chatter by graphic designers criticizing the new logo. (Both logos below.)
Corporate identity is a huge issue for many businesses, and this one seems to have backfired on Gap. It is very, very expensive for a large organization to change its name: all printed materials, signage, marketing material, vehicle graphics, etc., with the old name and logo have to be changed.
So that got me to thinking about SMDC’s recent name change to Essentia Health. Personally, I don’t like the change: the name sounds like something thought up by a research group and could be used to market some kind of dietary supplement for seniors. And it kind of irks me that SMDC would spend the money to make this seemingly unnecessary move when so many people are fighting the high cost of health care.
Of course, I may be overreacting. Anyone else have a problem with the SMDC name change?

Students at UMD organize a 12-hour dance marathon to support kids in need
Beginning at 6pm on Friday and ending at 6am on Saturday morning, Duluth students and local community members will stay on their feet, dancing to live music and DJs while interacting with patients and their families from Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare. The Dance Marathon student organization is welcoming everyone at this event, emphasizing that participants need not be expert dancers.
