The Wails of November

Last night at the Brewhouse I mentioned to Cody, the guy next to me at the bar, that I liked the comic on the cover of this week’s Transistor, even though I have to admit that I don’t understand it.

He told me he understands it perfectly, then started talking about fractals and how the comic is referring to a famous Japanese picture and so on. Maybe it was the Starfire Ale, or maybe I’m just stupid, but no matter how hard Cody tried, he couldn’t get me to understand this comic.

Obviously there’s a play on the phrase “Gales of November” going on. There seems to be some roller derby girls surfing. That’s about all I can make of it.

Can anyone explain this comic in a way that I’ll understand?

The Great Wave off Kanagawa, by Katsushika Hokusai meets the Harbor City Roller Dames as seen through bluntcakes.com.

OK, so what the artist is saying is:

“You’ll be hearing the wailing of roller derby girls as they come crashing into each other like waves on Lake Superior on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the DECC’s South Pioneer Hall, when the Harbor City Roller Dames sink the Paper Valley Flyin’ Squirrels of Appleton, Wis.”

Now I get it. That’s actually pretty simple. And it’s not what Cody was saying at all — other than the famous Japanese painting part.

And I should note that I did not post this as a sly plug for the Roller Dames … I sincerely was wondering what the comic was about. Thank you, GirlFromNorthCountry.

Well, Paul, we certainly appreciate the unintended attention paid to our event.

I wish I were as talented as my friend Bluntcakes!! But alas, it’s not my work. And I nearly accused you of guerrilla marketing, Paul. But, I know better. 😉

Thanks guys for the compliments! When I heard the title of the upcoming bout “The Wails of November,” The Great Wave was immediately what I thought of first when I set to doing a toon for it. I hope to see you guys at the bout! Woot! Go HCRD!

    I still don’t get it.

Rollerskates are heavy, and they’d be hard to swim in. Plus, sand and water are hardly mediums for rollerskating.

    GFNC:

Wait a minute, the pic of Bubonic Tonic on the Roller Dames web site looks nothing like the GFNC as I know her.

So, are there two folks using the handle Girl From North Country or has the original Bubonic Tonic retired and GFNC has taken on her roller derby persona, but a photo hasn’t been posted?

    Inquiring minds need to know!

There are two GFNCs. The one Tony is thinking of doesn’t comment as much as she used to, though.
