Academic staff at the University of Wisconsin-Superior voted today 89-5 to affiliate with the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin. The election turnout was 54 percent.

I’ve heard the Maya Mexican Restaurant at 220 W. Superior St. has been closed for a few weeks. It was indeed locked up today during the lunch hours.
One block up and one block over, the former Chef Yee’s location has a sign promising a new Oriental restaurant.
Complimentary Community Day * Free tours at Glensheen

Glensheen will be offering free standard house tours on Friday, May 27 in celebration of the 32nd anniversary of opening to the public. The complimentary community day begins at 9:30 a.m. and the last tour starts at 4 p.m. Tickets can be picked up in the ticket house, located at the base of Glensheen’s parking lot, beginning at 9 a.m.
The standard house tours will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. (Hint: arrive early – a limited number of tickets are available.)
Horseback riding along Amity Creek Trail
I am wondering if folks who use the trail along Amity Creek between Amity Road and Maxwell/Skyline have issues with horseback riding in that area. My daughter and her friends ride their horses there when it is dried up in late spring into the fall. I also use the trail for hiking and mountain biking and like to see the trail kept as multi-use. I’m just looking for comments to see if there have been any problems encountered by folks using the trail. Please, no horse poop jokes. Thanks.

The Life of Riley – Sneak Preview
At long last, 4 Track Films is having a sneak preview of its latest feature length film, The Life of Riley. Come on down to the Zinema on Monday, June 13, and be the first to see the film. The Life of Riley not only shows off the beauty of Duluth and the North Shore, but also features many local (and a few from the Twin Cities) actors, technicians and designers. Also featuring homegrown music from Low, the Black-eyed Snakes, Charlie Parr, Haley Bonar, Mary Bue, the Alrights, the Very People, Cars & Trucks, the Keep Aways, Kathy McTavish, Crew Jones, Equal Xchange and Minnesota-grown Martin Zellar.
This screening will be a fundraiser to help us get a jump start on our festival circuit. $10 suggested donation with Q&A and informal reception afterward.

Has anyone seen the little bear on Park Point? I first saw it last Saturday by the water pumping station. We surprised each other and ran our separate ways. Then today I was driving back from the Park Point Airport and saw him (?) again, at 41st Street, inspecting a garbage can. I pulled over to take a picture. He sort of hid in the shade on someone’s front stoop (!). The photo looks weird because I had to brighten it way up to make the bear visible.
How did this bear get onto the point? How long has he been there? How old is he? He’s Newfoundland-sized. Will he swim to Wisconsin where the accommodations are less urban? Does the Park Point Community Club have a bear relocation program?

The woods of Duluth are starting to fill in with flowers, like bloodroot (above). Warm spring sun is finally reaching the forest floor, and the wildflowers are responding in kind, sending their leaves and flowers up for a brief but raucous period of color, pollination and photosynthesis. (more…)
Duluth Master Bread & Arco Billboards
Back in December, the subject of the old Master Bread billboard came up in the thread about the Peerless Auto Body fire.
I’m guessing that’s the reason this showed up in my e-mail:
Does anyone know where the Master Bread billboard with the moving slices of bread coming out of the package ended up? Or, the Arco Coffee billboard with the steaming coffee being poured into the pot?

Is anyone out there holding on to these collector’s items, or can someone confirm they were destroyed?
National Trails Day at Enger Tower

Hans “No Way” Rey Will Attend the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail Grand Opening
From June 10 to 12, Hans Rey will be visiting and riding the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail Grand Opening in Crosby, Minnesota! The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be cutting the ribbon for the Grand Opening of Cuyuna Country State Recreation Bike Trail Network. The world trials champion and extreme rider Hans “No Way” Rey will ride the stunning new 30-mile mountain bike trail.
Abandoned by mining companies more than 20 years ago, the Cuyuna State Recreation Area offers the finest mountain biking within the Midwest. It is home to astonishing mountain bike single-track trails. Beginner, intermediate, and expert trails follow along the sides of 200-foot slag piles overlooking 500-foot deep crystal clear mine pools.
Hans Rey is not only a multiple Trials National and World Champion, he is one of the pioneers of Trials and Extreme Mountain Biking. Hans earned recognition with his jump over a car on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles, his volcano dance in Hawaii, his under water bungee jump, and his Machu Picchu Adventure. He was also a part of the 1996 Olympic Games by performing in the Extreme Sports Act in front of 3.5 billion viewers in the Olympic Closing Ceremonies. Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge is hosting Hans Rey for the event. Ruttger’s is the official lodging sponsor of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Festival.
