Spooky season-centric presentations include talks on Vampira, MTV’s Fear and the ghosts of the Depot. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. Halloween costumes and attire encouraged. Also: games and prizes.

– “Ghouls Rule: the Life and Legacy of Vampira” by Kelly Florence
Presentation Description: Many may not know all that Maila Nurmi — aka Vampira — contributed to horror. Hear the tea of the men she dated, the people who lied to her and her time living in Duluth. Presenter Bio: Kelly Florence is the co-author of eight books, including The Science of Women in Horror. She teaches at Lake Superior College and is the horror programmer for the Zeitgeist Minnesota Film Festival.
– “MTV’s Fear–What Were They Thinking?” by Luke Moravec
Presenter Bio: Luke Moravec is a radio show host with The North 103.3 in Duluth. He’s in a Scooby Doo-inspired one-man band called Zeb or Zeke and the Run Away Screamings. He loves biking, swimming in Lake Superior and presenting at Nerd Nite.
– “Haunted Depot” by Ken Buehler
Presenter Bio: Ken Buehler was the Executive Director of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum and Historic Union Depot. He has believes the Depot is haunted. He’ll show a video detailing a poltergeist’s activities.

Nerd Nite 10 will showcase some of the favorite nerdy presentations from the past year and half. Come enjoy some midweek entertainment, learn something you didn’t know you didn’t know.
It’s like the Discovery Channel with beer.
Nerd Nite a success
Congratulations to Nerd Nite, the excellent night out at Teatro Zuccone.
Talks about rock tumbling, Star Wars prop replicas, and astronomy marked the evening as what it could be, at its best: a showcase for the passions of individuals. [If the talk on Fan Fiction fell short, it only fell short because the speaker was talking about someone else’s passions, not her own.] I had no idea the energy and the technique involved in rock tumbling. I had no idea the complexity of recreating (replicating) the props used in the first Star Wars movies. And, well, a bedroom designed so that the Big Dipper can be viewed in 3 dimensions from various other stars in the Galaxy, well, wow.
I enjoyed myself, I met a new person, and I felt the passions of others. What more could I ask for $5 admission and $3 for a bottle of Minnesota-brewed soda pop?
Thanks to the organizers, to the Zuccone for hosting, and to the presenters for a great night out.
