Crime Increases? Please share your stories

Its been a busy couple of weeks here in Duluth. Last week our house in East Hillside was entered by a stranger who tried to coax us outside for who knows what reason. Last week also brought a terrible gang beating of my girlfriend’s co-worker and a violent mugging on the Lakewalk. This morning on my way to work I was nearly run over in my front yard by a group of police and search dogs. Someone was shot by the co-op a few weeks ago. We know the local news has been trying to put stories together about the increase in crime in Duluth and are being met with silence from law enforcement. It seems terribly unfair to keep neighborhoods in the dark about crime activity in their back yards. Would folks be comfortable sharing what they see and know in this space? Also – does Duluth’s hillside have any organized neighborhood watch programs? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Rally for Max Pelofske in Proctor

A young gay man was assaulted in New Independence Township on Saturday evening after being confronted about his sexual identity at a party characterized as a send-off for graduating Proctor High School seniors. He sustained injuries from the beating that landed him in the hospital after being attacked by as many as 15 party attendees.  We are meeting in Proctor on Monday, May 28, 4 p.m., at the train on Hwy 2 to stand against hatred, to hold a healing space for Max and his family, and to provide support for all members of the GLBTAQI community throughout the Twin Ports.  We would love to invite you all and your friends and families to join us as we peacefully demonstrate against hate crimes in our area.

Harbor Symphony

Do you (or a friend) have access to a boat (ship, tug, tanker, trawler, yacht…) with a loud horn or whistle? Do you play a loud, low acoustic instrument audible from at least 200 yards (Sousaphone, tuba, trombone, foghorn, chain saw, Alphorn, hammer/anvil, church carillon, or are you part of a drum circle or Dykes on Bikes)? Are you near Duluth-Superior on Labor Day Saturday and available to premiere a giant piece of music during DS Pride celebrations? We need your help!

Philip Blackburn, St. Paul based environmental sound artist, through an Artist Initiative fellowship from the Minnesota State Arts Board, is composing a Harbor Serenade for as many community participants as possible; all honking, blowing, hooting and tooting across the water (and a few on the shoreline).

But it will be hot in here!

If you have ever attended one of Harvey Plasch’s BarBQueer events you can imagine how much fun this will be! Dinner and an aerialist performance followed by DJ extraordinare David Vipond (you may remember him as judge’s choice from this year’s Minnesota Ballet Celebrity Dance Challenge) and dancing!

( A play on 25 being the silver anniversary since its our 25th anniversary of the Pride Festival in the Twin Ports.)

A & Dubs

I am new to Duluth and live over here in West End…My son and I are concerned about A&Dubs.  Does anyone know when it usually opens? Will it survive the new jr high school renovations?  I tried to call the number and it is disconnected.  I though maybe it opens like Memorial Day or something and folks who are more in the loop would just already know that.
