A & Dubs

I am new to Duluth and live over here in West End…My son and I are concerned about A&Dubs.  Does anyone know when it usually opens? Will it survive the new jr high school renovations?  I tried to call the number and it is disconnected.  I though maybe it opens like Memorial Day or something and folks who are more in the loop would just already know that.

I drove by there the other day and noticed that it was still boarded up. I was concerned too.

I looked up A & Dubs’ number in the phone book and just called. The person who answered said they are hoping to open next Monday.

I think it’s safe to say construction of the new junior high school will have no affect on A & Dubs. By my estimation, the locations will be almost a half-mile apart.

wont that have a positive effect?

Official word from the owner: Next Monday.

Baci, I think the post questioned whether the construction of the school would affect A & Dubs negatively. Construction seldom has a positive affect until it’s completed.

Will the existence of the new middle school be good for A & Dubs? It can’t really be bad, but I don’t think it will help much either. The school will be closed in the summer, when the restaurant is open. There might be a bunch of families that move into the neighborhood to live near the school, but they won’t necessarily eat more burgers and drink more root beer than the people who live there right now.

What about the construction workers? That would be a convenient place to get some lunch.

There indeed could be a temporary boost in business from hungry construction workers.

Also, the restaurant does stay open a few weeks into the school year. I’m guessing the middle school will have a closed lunch period, but kids might go there after school for a frosty mug. Of course, the place is a drive-up joint, so there isn’t much seating.

Overall, I have to stick with the opinion that it won’t affect business there much.

One thing that might boost business at A & Dubs is this post. I’m getting more hungry for a Hunter Basket with every comment I write.

I live on Vernon St and know the access road is going to turn up to the school right by there or maybe through there. I am glad to hear they are opening next week – and not a red plan casualty.

Hey Danny, Big Boy: you might want to go easy on those Gordy’s pizzaburgers, you know. Once over the lips and all. just sayin’

    Sage advice from “Chunky Monkey”.

By the way, I noticed yesterday that the West Duluth Dairy Queen is open, so once A & Dubs opens on Monday the full Triple Crown of Summer gluttony will be in effect.

When does the London Road Dairy Queen open? I keep driving by there and it’s still boarded up.

Danny…please tell me you are joking. The Dairy Queen on London road closed after the summer of ’96.

according to the owner of the central entrance DQ, the “company,” meaning DQ HQ, has no intention of reopening the london rd DQ, mainly due to the size of the lot and some issues with the building that don’t fit DQ’s current market stragety. conversely, they’re also not interested in selling the property either. the central entrance DQ is similar in size, but has been in operation for long enough that it’s sort of grandfathered in to whatever building and lot requirements that are currently in place, which is what the Hermantown DQ location falls under.

I was joking about the London Rd DQ.

London Road DQ really bothers me. Tried to rent it once, you know? they said something was coming in. that was five years ago … and … the rest as they say is (Duluth) history.

Development is coming, just not sure when.

I used to live just uphill from the London Road DQ (post-closure), and always took note of the latest graffiti (it was hard not to).

My favorite was one morning seeing “Zune” spray-painted in big letters. It prompted a picture in my mind of Bill Gates sneaking into the neighborhood at night, carrying out a covert, guerrilla-style marketing campaign in a last-ditch effort to promote Microsoft’s struggling media player.

    Who knows? It could happen.

A and Dubs is open. It has survived crazy construction in the last years. I’m sure it will be fine. It is definately open though. I cook there. Hey we have orange Fanta now!

Does anyone know if the BBQ sauce at A&Dubs is the same recipe that was used by the A&W in Hibbing back in the 1960s? Every time I have it on a burger it brings back memories of my childhood.

I ate at A&Dubs last Friday and it was fantastic! Let summer begin!
