Duluth Car Share

Me and a friend are thinking about starting up a car share program in Duluth. Car sharing is useful for those of us who only need a car on occasion — not often enough to justify being solely responsible for the costs of owning one. In a car-sharing group, members split the cost of insurance and repairs, and they all have use of the car(s), signing it out as needed. The program is still in the very, very early stages and right now we’re trying to gauge community interest and brainstorm ideas. Interested? Join our Facebook group!

Time Bank

Does anyone know if there is a Twin Ports Time Bank? (Some places know it as time exchange or other terms.) If not, has there been one and it failed? Any info would be appreciated.

Time Bank is a service exchange where a person will do a job for one person and “bank” time for help from another person for people that might not know what it is. I mow your lawn and you re-shingle my roof. That type of thing.

Extended hour and reduced price for the Smithsonian Send-off!

Duluth Art Institute
Friday, July 16th
5 to 7 pm
The Depot
Admission: $6

By popular demand the Duluth Art Institute is hosting a special send-off to say Bon Voyage to the Smithsonian Exhibit “In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraits” with music by Kip Jones and half-price admission to the exhibit! Don’t miss the last chance to see the most popular art exhibit of the summer before it makes the long trek to Texas — the next stop on its tour.

Kip Jones will send off the exhibit in National Geographic style. He describes his music as “traditional fiction” or “experimental folk”; that is, traditional music from regions or people that don’t exist. Having dragged his violin across the Americas from Cape Breton to Tierra del Fuego, and across Asia from Kanyakumari to Jeollanamdo, years of travel have shaped his music into something both structurally foreign and profoundly American.

Everyone is welcome. The exhibit’s official last day is Sunday, July 18. The Depot is open every day 9:30 – 6 pm. Call or email the Duluth Art Institute – 218-733-7560 or [email protected] for more information.

Organized by the Smithsonian Institution, this exhibit is supported locally by a grant from the Depot Foundation, sponsored by Cartier Agency and in partnership with the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center

In Search of Duluth Volunteer Opportunities

I am looking for volunteer opportunities in and around Duluth. Tips for where to look for opportunities or actual opportunities themselves would be much appreciated.

Donation of Screenprinting for Bradfest?

Anyone out there interested in donating their mad screenprinting skills (and subsequent equipment) to help make some fund-raise-able goods for upcoming Bradfest August 13 & 14? It’s looking to be a really killer fundraiser for MN musicians, and a celebration of the life of Brad Rozman, former percussionist for local bands Equal Xchange and High Volt Rustler. If you can help, I’ll bake you two pies and will blush and stammer next time I see you. Thanks for considering!

Berry picking in northern Minnesota

According to the Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture, blueberry patches from Stillwater to Cambridge are reporting a bumper crop.

While blueberries are peaking in the southern half of the state, they might not be ready for picking in northern Minnesota until July 17 — which is this weekend.

There are 26 blueberry farms statewide listed in the Minnesota Grown Directory. As for the wild ones, well … I’m not telling.

Stimulating the economy … one slightly used car at a time.

I like this idea.

Craigslist: $189,900 Buy our house, get a FREE car (Cloquet)

They’re giving away a car along with a house. I wonder if I could get a motorcycle if I rent an apartment? Or maybe I could get a scooter if I rent a storage unit?

Advice (and strong pain meds) wanted!

My back normally hates me, but now it’s hating me with a lot more angst than usual. Can anyone recommend a good chiropractor for a neck fix-er-up?

I’m hoping to find someone who can make my vertebrae play nice with each other, but not have them try to sell me some new-age hoo-haw or convince me to show up twice a week for the next few years. Thanks!!!

Need Fun!

I don’t get it. Is the billboard telling me I need fun in Hulk/Caveman language? Does Roper’s need fun people to facilitate a positive atmosphere and therefore generate more customers? Does the billboard proclaim that people in general need to have fun in their lives? Is there really someone (like Mr. Norman Fell in Three’s Company) named Roper? Or does the place belong to all people who rope things, in which case the apostrophe is misplaced? This is what I’m asking you.

GPS Help

I’m thinking about getting a handheld GPS. We’d use it hiking, maybe try geocaching with the kids and when paddling. So if was waterproof and usable in the car, that’d be great, but not necessary.
Anybody have recommendations or have one they want to get rid of?

What the hell kind of bugs are these?

These bugs showed up early in the morning on the Fourth of July at Sturgeon Lake and quickly died off. But for the few hours they existed, they made quite a mess. They are small enough to go right through screens. We swept thousands of them off the floor.
