This week: Dylan, health care comedy, networking and storytelling
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Duluth Dylan Fest dominates the calendar this week with many events in several venues, including a film fest, a panel discussion about Dylan’s legacy, and a concert on a train.
Tuesday you can laugh till it hurts at Laughing to Keep from Crying, sketch comedy inspired by our health care system at the Play Ground.
On Wednesday you can network about networking at the Zenith Social Media Marketing Conference downtown at the Holiday Inn.
It’s sort of like the Swiss Family Robinson in reverse. A family with two small girls live aboard their sailboat in the Great Lakes and Atlantic for a year. The book release of “Big Waves, Small Boat, Two Kids” by area writer Katya Gordon is this Thursday at the Fitger’s Bookstore.
Area writers and performers converge on the Teatro on Friday for another edition of Zenith City Tales with the story telling theme being about education this time around.

There is a lost or abandoned little cub in the Arrowhead/Swan Lake Road area. If you spot him, call Kelly asap at 218-591-2967, while not letting him out of your sight. Kelly and a vet will come out immediately to dart and catch him. We need to catch this guy soon; he’s tiny and has been without mom for more than 24 hours; he won’t survive for much longer without help. Thanks!

Not that 61 needs any more traffic, but it’s nice to see it get some recognition.

Where are the roller derby fans in Duluth?
As a Harbor City Roller Dame, it baffles me that we are yet to reach our goal of selling out tickets at the DECC Pioneer Hall since playing there the Fall of 2010. Many skaters are involved in or support the local arts and music scene. We are professionals that live and work in this community. The Dames give back by selecting a local charity to receive a financial contribution and/or volunteer our time. So it begs me to ask: Why is roller derby not as popular or successful in Duluth as it is in say Minneapolis or even smaller towns like Grand Rapids, MN?
Larger cities support multiple teams and are still successful. While locally we’ve seen numbers fall in the last year as our competitiveness has enhanced (we were undefeated until last month’s bout). Roller derby continues to gain popularity across the nation but is slightly stunted here. We need our fans to show their continued support and find ways to reach other demographics to spread the love of derby in Duluth. Our performance is bolstered by the encouragement of our sports enthusiasts.
Does the PDD community have any thoughts on what we can do to fill our seats? Comments? Feedback?
Calling all interested Duluth bands
I am interested in booking some bands into my bar (Classic Hard Times Saloon in Bemidji). We hire bands from the Minneapolis area and fill in with a lot of great local bands. There are 50 million users on Instagram but there are no Perfect Duluth Day hashtags? Duluth iger’s, you need to get on this. It’d be a great place to curate creative shots of D-town.
Tischer Creek at Twilight Time Lapse
Last night I set my hammock underneath a footbridge in Tischer Creek to sleep over trickling water and under a starry sky. Using LED lights I lit the water and the hammock and came out with this time lapse. I hope to try this again but with different camera settings so I can capture star traces in the sky.
Get fresh food back into Lincoln Park
Lincoln Park’s Fair Food Access project has been chosen as a national finalist for a Facebook voting campaign called “Cause an Effect,” through State Farm Insurance. Ten clicks of your mouse could mean $25,000 for this project. Voting ends at midnight tonight, May 17. Use your Facebook time for good — follow this direct link to vote.

PDD Shift: Dan Neff / Lake Superior Art Glass
This is the last of four videos in the PDD Shift series. This profiles Dan Neff, one of the winners of the Greater Downtown Council’s Go Downtown / Grow Downtown contest from last year. At the end of this month Dan is opening a new store, Lake Superior Art Glass, at 202 E. Superior St. The shop will feature classes, various glass artwork, as well as front window demos.
The grand opening is May 31.
Logo Contest for Duluth Horse Trails
Artists and designers — especially those with a special love for the outdoors or horses — are needed to help a new Duluth area trail-building group develop a logo. The Duluth Area Horse Trail Alliance is holding a logo contest that will be the centerpiece of its promotional campaigns.

Anyone recommend a person good at installing doors?
We’re looking for someone who can hang two solid oak doors, including cutting out the hole for the handle and notching out for the hinges. We’re looking for someone with experience as with these doors they will definitely have to measure twice and cut once, because there will be no going back if cut wrong.

Munger Trail field report
For 25 years, one of the best bike rides in Duluth for those who like level, flat trails is the Munger Trail. But before you head out for a great ride up the old railroad track bed through the hills of far west Duluth, you might want to read my blog update about trail closures and delays this summer. There’s a total trail closure for bridge construction in the Riverside area until June 1 and major re-paving in the works for this summer.
The trillium and violets are blooming like crazy along the trail, though your best bet is to head for the parking lot off Becks Road for now.

This week: steampunk, a cult TV classic, ale and sailboats
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Today kicks off the free Monday showings of The Prisoner at the Zinema 2. It also kicks off Mondays with the Mayor. Coincidence? I think not. March into the mayor’s office and tell Don, “I am not a number!” I dare ya.
Speaking of numbers, ever wonder what that Donald and Daisy Duck salt and pepper set that’s been gathering dust in the back of your liquor cabinet was worth? Find out on Wednesday at the Antique Appraisal at the Depot. Also on that day the Wednesday Sailboat Races return to a great lake very near you!
On Thursday you can grab the Brewpub Bus and go to Tycoons, Thirsty Pagan and Carmody and taste three takes on the same ale recipe. And if you happen to see some people decked out in Victorian neofuturist garb, it’s not that you drank too much, it’s the Steampunk Expo at the Duluth Art Institute with the afterparty at the Rathskeller.
Saturday you can help clean up the St. Louis River and then watch our Roller Dames clean up in their match against the Bemidji Babe City Rollers. See what I did there?
