Welcome Home, Full Circle Superior

On September 18, the Full Circle Superior walkers will finish the last few miles of their trek around Lake Superior. All are welcome to join Mike Link and Kate Crowley as they walk the final mile of their journey by meeting at Leif Erikson Park at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. They’ll walk along the Lakewalk to Canal Park Lodge for an informal reception with refreshments. The reception begins at 2 p.m. and will include an outdoor tobacco ceremony.

Mike and Kate will complete their circle of Lake Superior the same weekend that the Lake Superior Circle Tour celebrates its 50th anniversary. It was on September 17, 1960 that the last leg of the Trans-Canada Highway opened in Wawa, Ontario, making it possible to circle Lake Superior by vehicle. A 50th anniversary celebration is planned in Wawa.

For more information about the event, call 218-722-5002.

Another Station Change

After yet another radio format switch I find myself wondering the reason for it all, and when it will end.  I must admit, the Bridge was one of the few stations left that I could stand to listen to.

Upper Midwest Broadcasting Station News reports:

Midwest Communications’ KDAL-FM/95.7 (Duluth) has dropped its “Bridge” Adult Alternative format and is now carrying Rock of the 1970s, `80s, and `90s as “Rock 96.”

What are everyone’s thoughts?

New PDD Bumper Stickers

I love this time of year. The leaves may be falling, but the Perfect Duluth Day sticker harvest has just begun. Stop by the Perfect Duluth Day booth at Chester Bowl’s Fall Fest this Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9:30am – 4:30pm to pick up your own free Perfect Duluth Day bumper sticker.

This is a brand new batch of stickers with a slightly different design than the original. (If you have an old sticker, you will officially be stuck in the past after Saturday.)

The PDD booth will be on the right side as you enter the park from Skyline, about halfway down the row.

Weather should be good, but the rain date is Sunday, Sept. 19, same time.

If you can’t make it to Fall Fest but still want a sticker, send a S.A.S.E to PDD.

Heads up! 12th and 14th Avenues East are now two-way streets!

In case you missed it, or nearly had a head-on collision today … with little fanfare, East 12th and 14th Avenues are now two-way streets! No longer can drivers drag race up 14th in a dash to get to Burrito Union first. Gone are the days of stopping at every stoplight on 12th. Be safe out there.

Trampled by Turtles on MTV?

It just might happen if the band gets enough votes in MTV’s online contest.

I just love seeing that iconic MTV logo up in the corner, makes me smile, but then again I’m a child of the 1980s and maybe it means something different to me than others.

This group is very friendly, very fun, very different from your “normal” choral ensemble. No music reading, no mumbled hymn singing, no screeching sopranos. Traditional music from the U.S. and West Africa and original songs written/arranged just for the chorus.

Hillfest 2010: Livin’ in the Hillside

The Hillside community welcomes its friends and neighbors to the first annual Hillfest, a new festival celebrating the Hillside. Hillfest will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the intersection of N. Sixth Ave. E. & Fourth St.

With live music, food, local art and craft vendors, a wealth of children’s activities, community information, and the revival of the Whole Foods Co-op Tofu Toss, it’s going to be a great day in the Hillside. Admission is free, and everyone is invited!

Participants are encouraged to walk or bike to Hillfest, though free parking will be available in the St. Mary’s ramp at 320 E. Fourth St. Kids will have the opportunity to decorate their bikes before a bike rodeo by the Duluth Police Department, try their luck on the climbing wall, and listen to music and stories from local artists.

Live music on the main stage will include Treetop Tango, 2one8, and others. The Whole Foods’ Tofu Toss is a ridiculously fun event, with all proceeds donated to East Hillside Patch’s Mind 2 Mind program. Tofu Toss registration forms are available at Whole Foods Co-op.

Hillfest is still accepting vendor registration. Registration is only $10, so it’s a great way to sell your wares and promote your business or organization.

For more information, check out the Hillfest Facebook page or the website at duluthmn.gov/hillfest.
