Heads up! 12th and 14th Avenues East are now two-way streets!

In case you missed it, or nearly had a head-on collision today … with little fanfare, East 12th and 14th Avenues are now two-way streets! No longer can drivers drag race up 14th in a dash to get to Burrito Union first. Gone are the days of stopping at every stoplight on 12th. Be safe out there.

I nearly drove into oncoming traffic last night as I headed up 14th from London Road.

It's been a long time coming. Lived in the neighborhood for many years and avoided 12th Avenue East from 4th Street - the lights were not in sync to my liking.

Number of times in my life I turned onto 14th Avenue East and drove the opposite way on the one-way route: 2

Number of times in my life I pulled up to 14th Avenue East signaling a turn in the wrong direction, then suddenly remembered it was a one-way route and aborted the turn: 32,681.

So, I'm pretty happy about this change.

Number of times someone came head on at me the wrong way on 14th only to do an abrupt U turn upon seeing me driving up the Avenue: 2

Coincidence?

I was having lunch today with my friend, out on the deck at Burrito Union. At one point, she said, "That's the sixth car I've seen drive the wrong way up this street." I alerted her that it was now two-way. We then toasted the fact with our drinks. Salut!

There be stop signs out there, people! Brand new stop signs! So when I'm noodling down 3rd or 2nd on my little yellow motorbike, please don't hit me.

Suck! I always relished the challenge those streets made of finding an efficient way around East Hillside. Now it'll just be too easy.

It was somewhere between amusing and horrifying to watch the miscues and near collisions at 12th and 3rd from the bakery today. In the long run, I think I'll like it.

Karsau: I'm not an English teacher by any means but ... Noodling is fishing for catfish using only bare hands, practiced primarily in the southern United States. I ride a grey Yamaha Zuma, so am equally interested in not getting hit. See you in the hood!

Chaos reigns there and for once the tourists are driving better than the locals. I agree it may be for the best when the dust settles, but a bit of signage would've helped.

Karsasu, I saw you on Third Street this morning (I think ... yellow motor bike @ 10th Ave. E.). You need to wear a helmet. I took a header a few weeks ago. Wise investment.

@topofthehillman Must not have been me because I don't sit on my bike in the driveway without my helmet, let alone take it on the street. Thanks for worrying about me, though! : D
