Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream on Lake Superior
By Ruthie on Jul 3, 2012 in Recommendations, Restaurants
Who can’t use ice cream during these hot days of summer! There’s a new ice cream shop at 1631 London Road (where Dairy Queen used to be). My husband and I were there on Saturday for their ‘soft’ opening and the ice cream was wonderful. They have soft-serve and traditional hard-serve ice cream. Take a detour off the Lakewalk and check it out!

Gasp!
I was just lying on my couch at 17th and Jefferson wondering if that place was open yet! I’m grabbing my wallet and keys right now! Thanks for the update!
It is excellent! My wife and I have been a couple times now. The ice cream is “local” and delicious! Excited for signage and a grand opening!
It’s so nice to hear about small non-chain businesses starting up in Duluth! I’ll definitely stop by as soon as I pass that way. Any menu recommendations? My favorite local ice cream in the region is at Maggie’s in Bayfield-- they do quirky flavors like lavender, creme brulee, lemon herb, etc. I also LOVE chocolate ice cream with cayenne pepper in it, but haven’t seen that anywhere in years.
Does anyone know if they’ve got pistachio ice cream?! Since moving to DLH, I can’t, for the life of me, find pistachio ice cream.
Just got back. No pistachio, but the fam enjoyed Yippee Skippee (PB ice cream with some kind of chocolate obnoxiousness), lemon meringue and Blue Moon. They have birthday cake, something called Fat Elvis, Zanzibar chocolate and a ton of other delicious-looking flavors. I saw a sign for caffeinated ice cream, too, which sounds like pure genius.
We met the manager, who was a very nice lady. We’ll go back.
(Also, it is a chain, but a teeny one, far as I know.)
Yep. Wisconsin-based chain. Teeny one, sure.
I do like their “if you want healthy, go eat a salad” nutrition disclaimer on the side of the building.
Cheaper than Coldstone? Maybe. We’ll see when we take the full crew. There is not as much variety, but the location makes it a win.
Specifics:
The shop is owned by Duluthian Craig Binsfield.
The ice cream comes from Madison-based Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream.
We ran over there last night while all of you guys were at the fireworks. I had a very good malt ice cream with chunks of really good chocolate in it.
There are company owned and independently owned Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream stores.
Took the kids last night after swimming on Park Point. Daughter raved about the pretzel ice cream cone. Son was thrilled to get to the bottom of his waffle cone and see the malted milk ball plug. The premium chocolate malt I had was delicious. Location is very convenient for us. Seven blocks down, then seven blocks up to work off the bazillion calories and kids’ sugar high.
Thank you for your support!
We are currently in the training phase and greatly appreciate your input!
Please let us know your favorites! Chocolate Shoppe is small but does offer 110 Flavors of Super Premium Ice Cream. We will rotate 24 different flavors at a given time and would love your input on new additions!
Thank you for your support! Walking up Duluth hills with kids is a work out! I have three! Can I suggest a delicious Mango or Triple Berry “Nonfat Smoothie”? Try one and let me know your thoughts. Greatly appreciate your input and want you to have a great experience!
Stopped by last week and got a scoop of “fat Elvis” (vanilla ice cream with banana, peanut butter and chocolate chunks) in a pretzel cone, and my boyfriend got lemon meringue ice cream in a chocolate-and-sprinkle-dipped waffle cone, and both were absolutely amazing. Looking forward to coming back again soon!
Peaked in the window on Saturday morning on my 6:30am run. Nice prices and a great variety of items. Neat to see Malts on the menu.
A nice large sign out front would really help with getting noticed.
Best of luck!
Enjoyed yippee skippy last night. Really wonderful ice cream and they are open through Halloween. I will visit again next summer.
Does anyone know when Chocolate Shoppe will be opening this year? I saw they were redoing the asphalt around the building last week, but I didn’t see a sign that said when the season will officially begin.
