Care package for Laurie Viets
Laurie Viets, native Superiorite and former DJ/Director for KUMD’s RPM show is confined to her hospital bed in Chicago for quite awhile. I’d like to organize a care package from the Northland for Laurie. She is pretty well stocked on magazines and books right now. I’m thinking crosswords, sodukus, hand held Yahtzee, those fun books with the invisible yellow magic markers, whatever. Music is fun, anything to brighten her room, stuff for Canyon (baby name). Even just mail is entertaining! Anything to break up the monotony would be appreciated.
If any of you have suggestions please let me know here or at, (igmossberger at hotmail dot com). I can setup a time and place for a drop-off. Laurie, if there’s anything you’d like, don’t be shy please let us know. God Bless.
Duluthians, how are you liking the fancy DTV so far?
WDIO dropped its analog signal and went fully digital last night. Folks with digital televisions (or with converter boxes) have to rescan channels in order for WDIO to come in. The station will not be at full power until Feb. 20. In the meantime, don’t break your rabbit ears.
From My Big Box of Photos | 2004
The 2004 Green Man was probably my favorite year. Sure the first one had it’s torrential rains and gale force winds and the last one had record breaking temps and gale force winds but 2004 was great. (more…)

Ever wonder about the street preachers in Duluth?
I stumbled upon this a while ago. I don’t want to start a flame war so am disabling comments (don’t want this to turn into DCB), just posting for those who are/were curious.

A helpful primer from the DNT letters section:
With all the news about the stimulus package, one thing no one has brought up is the theory of this package. It is taken from the 1930s by an economist named Cain and was the theory used for many years until the late 1970s or early 1980s recession….

Have kids age 9 to 12? Or know someone who does?
They can pick up an official Art Jam poster entry at Papa Murphy’s (Kenwood, Superior, West Duluth) and return it by March 13 for a free mini pizza!

Renegade Opens Its 2009 Season!

RENEGADE KICKS OFF 2009 WITH A BARREL FULL OF LAUGHS!
(Duluth, MN) – Renegade Comedy Theatre is proud to announce the kick-off of their 2009 season with a production of Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lindsay-Abaire’s uproarious comedy smash, WONDER OF THE WORLD! This production runs Thursdays through Saturdays, February 12th through the 28th at the Teatro Zuccone in downtown Duluth. All performances are at 8pm and tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. Call 218-336-1414 for tickets or purchase them online at www.teatrozuccone.com.
The play follows Cass, a young woman who finds a secret in her husband’s sweater drawer so shocking that she has no choice but to leave him and begin a frantic search for the life she missed out on. Armed with only a suitcase, some jello molded in the shape of a fish and a list of all the things she wants to do before she dies, she boards a bus bound for Niagara Falls. What follows is a hysterical adventure as Cass befriends a blithely suicidal alcoholic, finds true love with a lonely tour boat captain and tries to avoid her husband and the pair of bickering private detectives he’s hired to track her down. Will Cass find a new life or take a barrel ride over the falls?
“I rarely laugh out loud when I see plays, even less when reading them,” admits Artistic Director Katy Helbacka, who’s directing the play. “But when I read this play, I laughed out loud … a lot. This is one of those rare plays that features an abundance of strong roles for women. In theatre, there is a large disparity between the number of actresses and the number of good roles. As an actress, I can attest to how boring it can be playing the damsel-in-distress, the girlfriend or the sassy best friend. This play offers our local talented actresses the chance to take the lead in telling the story. The men are the supporting cast this time. In this show, it’s all about the ladies!”
“We felt this was the perfect show to kick-off our 2009 season, as it reminds audiences that Renegade is committed to entertaining our audiences. As it has been for the past 17 years, a large amount of that entertainment comes from making people laugh, and that won’t change. This show serves as a reminder of what we do best, but also offers a peek into the new direction we’re heading with attention paid to the technical aspects of productions as well as a desire to tell moving, fascinating and meaningful stories in a fresh, bold, new way.”
Six-Word Memoirs: Valentine Edition
On NPR yesterday there was a segment about Six-Word Memoirs on Love and Heartbreak that was published in Smith Magazine. Inspired by novelist Ernest Hemingway, who, when asked to write a full story in six words, responded: “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.”
It was a great listen and now in honor of Saint Valentine it is your turn. My submission is above, leave yours in the comments.
