Dusty Slay jabs Great Lakes Aquarium on Tonight Show

Last night comedian Dusty Slay appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallen and at the end of his monologue launched into a story about a visit to the Great Lakes Aquarium. The story, which begins at the 3:15 mark in the clip above, concludes with Slay asking a “fish expert” at the aquarium whether fish sleep. To not spoil the punchline, let’s just say he gets a Yogi Berra-style response.

Slay does not mention the Great Lakes Aquarium by name, but as a story on Mix 108’s website notes, “he’s certainly not referencing World of Fish.”

Great Lakes Aquarium art on Superstore

It was nearly impossible to notice, but there was a glimpse of Duluth in the series finale of the NBC sitcom Superstore. The episode, titled “All Sales Final,” aired March 25. It concludes with a scene of the character Amy Sosa putting her children to bed. For just a few seconds, a piece of Great Lakes Aquarium art by Daymark Designs, a Duluth-based graphic arts company, is shown in the background.

Cold weather experiments at Great Lakes Aquarium

We’ve been conducting a variety of cold weather experiments at Great Lakes Aquarium this week. The location is just about perfect for it; right on the waterfront in Duluth with a door connecting our classroom lab to the outside.

This video should serve as a reminder to make sure your hair and your clothes are completely dry before heading out.

Aquarium hosts “Ships in the Night”

Great Lakes Aquarium will exhibit photographs by Mary T. George from March 2 to May 22 in the Aquarium’s fine arts gallery. The public is invited to an opening reception Wednesday, March 2, from 5-7 p.m.   The exhibit features photos of ships that have made recent history in the Twin Ports including the Mesabi Miner, Edgar B. Speer, Edwin H. Gott and others.

Aquarium Executive Director Jack LaVoy says that Mary “brings the energy and majesty of our working waterfront to life and sets a standard of excellence that can only be achieved by someone with an artist’s eye and an abiding love of the harbor.”
