Surely some of you noticed PDD was down for several hours today. It was the fifth time we’ve had problems with our server in the past two months, so naturally we’ll be taking our business elsewhere very soon.

We hope you won’t take your blogging elsewhere while these difficulties are sorted out.

Sad to be leaving Lakeside…… but happy to invite you to my OPEN HOUSE this Saturday!

…but my loss could be your gain!   I’ve taken a new job  in St. Paul and, as such, am selling my beloved little Lakeside house.

Please stop by my OPEN HOUSE this Saturday, March 28th, from 1-3pm to see this place in person. If you can’t make it then, I will probably have another the following weekend at the same time (check the paper or my website).

Front of house (taken before the new shingling was installed)

Front of house (taken before the new shingling was installed)

I really do think this place is uniquely charming– and not just because it’s mine.   It has a great layout, beautful crown moulding, tons of storage space, and a nice big backyard (complete with lilacs and apple trees).  Please visit www.909n49th.com for all of the details (& more photos) and contact info.

I bought this house in August, 2005 for $175,000– since then, it has been updated through-out, including converting from oil to a high-efficiency gas furnace, brand new roofing, new carpeting, new bathroom cabinets, etc.   But… sigh… the market is not what it was in 2005, so I’m letting this one go for $184,900.   Hopefully someone will love this house as much as I have.

Paper or Plastic?

Diaper Man!

Diaper Man!

Alyssa reminded me today that we can ask each other questions on PDD and get some great localized answers.  So, I have three questions to ask the collective PDD wisdom/snark base.   Yes three, but I’ll stick to two for now.

Question #1 I am blessed with a new baby that is coming sometime in the next several weeks.  For my first two girlies I used plastic diapers without any prejudice.  However, with this one, my partner has been advocating for the use of re-usable cloth diapers.  And I am going along on this, and not just because I have to, but because I want to.   In fact, I am washing my first batch of cloth diapers now (just out of the package).  I am interested in stories, experiences and advice on the reusable diaper front from a local perspective, I’m especially interested in stuff like logistics, tips and tricks, price savings, and if anyone has any theories of actual savings and environmental benefits, etc.  For the record, the plan is to breast feed this child, I know that makes a difference.  And, because she is on parental leave indefinitely I suspect she will be doing quite a bit more of the changing, but I will probably do most or all of the laundry, so the decision affects us both. I would also entertain general earth friendly baby advice, offers of free stuff you think we could use, and good infant activity ideas around the area as this will be my first new one in 6 years.

Question #2 Is almost completely unrelated, however, I hope it will produce some fascinating advice mash-ups.  Here goes, during my long period of unemployment and underemployment I archived nearly all of the wild goose music library onto a hard drive for eternal use.  Then, being broke I sold as many of those cds as I could to pay for stuff like food, bills and (until I quit) cigarrettes).  I also gave many that could not sell away because I just didn’t think I “needed” anymore.  So … things have been going just fine until … the last few weeks.  I got a new laptop and thousands of the dang things won’t play.  the reason is that over the course of the last few years I have used a number of junker computers and all of them are gone now.  The digital files are wma’s with DRM and the windows site says that I have downloaded the license too many times.  This is very troubling as it looks like those are just “ghost files” that I will never be able to play ever again, and being a (retired) DJ I still kind of need them sometimes, not to mention WANT to listen to them.  I have looked into a number of different ways of removing the drm on various bulletins, etc online and it all seems very confusing and many of them also seem very pirate-like.  I am not interested in slinking around in the shadows (much)  since these are all things that I prchased legally and feel like I “own” and I feel I should be allowed to use them on any coputer I own, or any computer anywhere for that matter.  So … looking for advice and experience with this matter as well.  Oh and if posible I would like to do this for free.  But would pay something if I knew what was the best way to proceed.

What makes Duluth attractive?

Hi all,

What makes Duluth attractive?  Why do people (or you) live here?

Why do tourists come to Duluth?

I’m currently working on a research paper centered around those questions and need more (informal) feedback to get a handle on this.  So, if you have an opinion on one, the other, or both questions, I’d love to hear it.

Thanks.

Setting the record straight

The best song by the Replacements is “I’m in Trouble” from  Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash. The best song by AC/DC is “Back in Black” from Back in Black. The best song by Ol’ Yeller is “Sulfur” from Nuzzle, and the best from the Glenrustles is “3 Perverts” from some Shaky Ray comp.  G’n’R’s best song is, of course, “Paradise City”, but mainly because of Slash’s guitar freak-out at the end. We all know that the best song featuring a sample from the theme song to “Sanford & Son” is “Old Man” by Masta Killer, featuring ODB and the RZA.

“Six Days”, “Dean’s Dream”, “Tacoland” and “Take Me Apart” are all tied as being the Dead Milkmen’s best songs, which means either a) the Dead Milkmen are really good at making mediocre songs I like or b) the Dead Milkmen are really good at making a bunch of really good songs.

Finally, I’m sure we can all agree that the best song ever is “Debaser” by the Pixies, from Doolittle.

Can the Old County Jail be saved?

duluth-jail

Folks, as you may know, the county has long wanted to tear down the historic St. Louis County Courthouse to create parking spaces. They are now pushing forward with those plans.

The jail is part of Duluth’s Civic Center, Duluth’s one-stop shop for some very impressive Classical/ Renaissance architecture. The center includes the St. Louis County Courthouse, Duluth City Hall, and the U.S. Federal Building-as well as the county jail, the Cass Gilbert-designed Soldiers & Sailors Monument (Fortitude Defending the Flag), and a fountain. The courthouse, which went up in 1909, was designed by famed architect Daniel H. Burnham, who among other accomplishments oversaw the entire design of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Abraham Olstead and William J. Sullivan designed the 1923 county jail, but did so in a manner in keeping with Burnham’s original idea and under Burnham’s direction. The gray granite building includes features such as Doric columns and lions heads. The jail is adorned with symbols of justice, including Roman fasces (a bundle of birch rods wrapped around an axe).

(The whole complex was part of the “City Beautiful” movement, a progressive reform movement of architecture and urban planning popular in the late 1890s and early twentieth century-it was thought that a beautiful city would create moral and civic virtue, people would behave, and the lives of inner-city poor would improve.)

The building is on the National Register of Historic Place and has been designated a Duluth Landmark property. Twice it has appeared on the Minnesota Historic Preservation Office’s “Ten Most Endangered Buildings” list.

Contrary to popular belief, the building can be successfully adapted for reuse, though it would be an expensive venture the county can’t afford. I know not everyone cares about saving our old buildings–and there are valid reasons the county has no more interest in maintaining the building. But to many like me, buildings such as the jail reflect our social and cultural heritage, and an effort should be made to at least attempt to sell the building to a party willing to invest in it–at the very least, demolition should only be discussed when all other options have been exhausted. They have not.

Technically, since the building has landmark status, the Duluth Heritage Preservation Commission (disclaimer: I sit on this commission) can do little else but deny any work on the building that does not meet it’s plan for renovation, and demolition does not fit the plan. Technically, the City Council can override the HPC, but only if the work on the building fits the Secretary of Interior’s standards for preservation projects, and again demolition does not fit such plans. But that does not mean it won’t happen.

If the future of this building matters to you and you want your voice heard on this issue, there will be a public hearing before the HPC at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 in the City Council Chambers in City Hall where you can speak your mind. Please attend.

And if you have some time tomorrow, at 2 p.m. folks are gathering at the Jail to show their support for the building. Please come.
