Wolf Hunting Prohibited on Fond du Lac Reservation

Passing along this photo from Ivy Vainio; click the image to see it in context.

Fond du Lac Band passed an ordinance banning the wolf hunt a few days ago.

Dan Kraker provided some fairly decent balanced coverage that explains some of the legal and cultural implications of the wolf hunt in this MPR News story.

The Big Year Christmas Eve in Duluth

The-Big-Year-Duluth

So, I’m fairly sure that no one has mentioned on PDD before that the 2011 movie The Big Year, which screened locally at Zinema 2, has a brief reference to Duluth. (Laura Erickson did mention it on her birding blog, though.)

The shot above is followed by a restaurant scene that is supposed to be in Duluth but is obviously not. (more…)

Perfect Duluth Beard

Duluth breeds good beards. As Novembeard commences, here is some local inspiration for your month-long beard growing festival.

The rules of Novembeard are simple.

  1. Shave on November 1.
  2. Don’t shave November 2-30.

Add your own Duluth facial hair icons and chart your beard progress in the comments.

Dukes of Hubbard reunion?

An online petition was opened over the weekend to convince the defunct Duluth band Dukes of Hubbard to reunite and potentially play the Homegrown Music Festival in May. Word has it that most of them are into it, but Ben Wizik needs some convincing.

This week: toilets, turtles and the dead

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

Jackson Brown plays the DECC tonight.

Nerd Nite at Teatro Zuccone on Tuesday features presentations on Scooby Doo, horror movies and Japanese toilets. You judge which is scariest.

Wednesday is Halloween proper. There’s an All Souls Night celebration Thursday at the Depot.

Trampled by Turtles plays a benefit for the Duluth Public Schools Music Program Thursday at Clyde Iron.

White Baby, a dark satirical play about an unwanted baby, opens at UMD this Thursday and runs for two weekends.

Depending on your disposition, you get an extra hour to party or sleep Sunday, our 25 hour day courtesy of the odd custom we call “Daylight Savings Time.” Set your clocks back an hour Saturday night/Sunday morning.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`

Last Watercolor on Earth

Jack Bratrud has a collection of watercolor paintings on display in the Louvre Gallery. His depiction of the Last Place on Earth seems like it shouldn’t go unnoticed on PDD.

Spooktacular

We attended the Spooktacular at Glensheen on Saturday. It was awesome. If you’ve not been, Sunday is another chance, and it’s worth every penny. Firedancer performs at 7, 7:30 and 8 p.m.

PS: Firedancer: Who recorded the music you dance to? It’s been a long time since I heard elektro-goth stuff like that.

Growler Magazine Contest

Hey Duluthians! Growler Magazine just nominated Fitger’s Brewhouse for “Best Brewpub” in Minnesota.

Would you vote for us? Everyone else up for the vote is from the Twin Cities and it would be great to make a strong Duluth showing!

Where in Duluth?

This one ought to be fairly easy, but we’ll see how it goes.

Where in Duluth?

Anyone growing grass indoors?

So first off, yes, this is an odd request. Secondly, no, I’m not looking for someone growing “grass,” I’m looking for someone who is growing grass (like the kind you’d find on your lawn) indoors. (more…)

East Superior Street Parking

It seems to me that in recent years, with the additions of Zeitgeist Arts, Black Water Lounge, Carmody Irish Pub, Tycoons, etc. (not to mention the fabulous new product additions at the Last Place on Earth) the area surrounding the NorShor Theatre has gone from being a really easy place to find a parking spot to one where you either have to get really lucky or park in a ramp.

I mention this mostly just to stir up the pot so people can bitch about progress, but I also want to throw out two observational questions:

1) Are you like me and fear parking in ramps because so many TV shows and movies when you were growing up had scenes where people get ambushed and shot in parking ramps?

2) Doesn’t it seem like kind of trap that the Sheraton ramp is free at night … until 2 a.m.? So, you know, go get drunk — the parking is free. But make sure you move your car before you get a cab home.

Outdoor Alliance Meeting

Representatives from the Outdoor Alliance met with local outdoor leaders last night at Hartley Nature Center. The goal was to form a collaborative effort in making local green space more accessible and maximizing outdoor opportunities for Duluthians and tourists alike. Last night’s meeting got the ball rolling in what will likely be a very successful collaboration between outdoor leaders in the region.

Kauzlaric Woods: Where in Duluth?

Normally when we play “Where in Duluth?” there would be a photo that doesn’t blatantly reveal the answer. In this case, we have a photo that obviously was shot at Kauzlaric Woods. So more specifically we ask, “Where in Duluth is Kauzlaric Woods?”

Once we’re done playing that little game, perhaps someone will be able to tell us who “Kauzlaric” is.
