Is there a term for those jagged ice formations on Duluth streets?
It’s probably the worst on Grand Avenue in West Duluth, but above is a shot on Fourth Street in the Central Hillside. You know what it is and obviously it pisses you off, but what is it called? Duluth has probably never experienced it before to an extent worth coming up with a name for it.
A news release today from the city of Duluth refers to it as “caked-on ice.” Is that good enough, or does someone have a better term?

Mysterious “Headless Snowman” in Duluth’s Canal Park
I think that PDD needs to solve the mystery of the headless snowman, preferably in the form of a song, an epic poem, or maybe a short story in the style of O. Henry or Charles Dickens. Ok. Go.

Connolly’s: Behind the Batter
For the past few years around this time, the discussion on PDD has turned to Tom & Jerrys – where to find the fixins, if there are acceptable alternatives to Connolly’s, and the ups and downs for Connolly’s.
The PDD film crew got sweet and sticky with Steve Knauss and John Kurth as they began production on this year’s batch of Connolly’s Tom & Jerry batter.
Stay warm, stay frothy.
Who remembers Scarlett Feed Store on First and Second avenues east?
I’m looking for a description of it (my memory is not always to be trusted) or, even better, old photos. I remember it from when I was a child, so that would have been in the mid-to-late 1960s, maybe even 1970s. I don’t remember when it closed but it had been there since the late 1800s.
Any musicians out there?
I am looking for someone to do a rock cover of a 3-minute song I wrote, preferably heavy metal but something more punkish would be OK, too. I can pay $50 and it doesn’t have to be that good, the most important thing is that the vocals be clear and understandable. This is for a Christmas present for someone, so I need it by Dec. 22. If you’re interested please e-mail me at robertlillegard -[at]- gmail -[dot]- com.

Fresh Duluth
This 2008 Pro Video documentary, produced and directed by Tom Livingston and Jack Lind, disappeared from the internet for a while, but now it is back.
Duluth will study ATV trail
I’m curious to see what the study consists of and who will conduct it. I’m sure the public will have an opportunity to provide input and review the study. Regardless of whether an ATV trail is eventually approved, enforcement is an ongoing issue on our city trails (and not just regarding snowmobiles and ATVs).

Duluth’s first double-header roller derby
If any of you missed the Harbor City Roller Dames first double header and Women’s Flat Track Derby Association sanctioned bout at the DECC, you missed some amazing roller derby action (twice as much as usual).

Lost dog in Lincoln Park
I was walking in Lincoln Park just an hour ago and this female dog seemed to not know where to go. She was poking her nose in snowbanks back and forth for blocks along Third street. She wouldn’t let me get close enough to see her tags. She’s golden hued, sort of like a short-haired golden retriever if there is such a thing. She has a white muff (chin and neck). She’s donning a red collar. The likelihood that someone reading this will find her is minimal, but I figured the readership here would know people who know people to take care of these type of things. It’s not that warm out there.

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Christmas is getting closer, and there are a lot of related events listed right here.
This week Amnesty International invites you to “Write for Rights” for human rights in general and the unjustly imprisoned in particular. There will be a table set up at the Multicultural Center at UMD Monday through Friday.

You can see what U of M graduate students in landscape and architecture think Duluth’s future might look like when they display their projects and take feedback at Clyde Iron on Wednesday.
Cars & Truks, Haley Bonar, Mary Bue, Southwire and many other bands give their tributes to one of Duluth’s signature bands, Low, when Duluth Does Low at Sacred Heart on Thursday.
You’ve seen the video here on PDD, now see the review! How the Grinch Shut Down Christmas or I Saw Rudolph Twerking Santa Claus is Rubber Chicken‘s sixth annual holiday revue at Spirit of the North Theater in Fitger’s. It opens on Friday and it runs through New Year’s Eve.

Hartley Arch
So what is going to be the established tradition for the Hartley arch? Is it a place to stop and smooch, or take a hit from your flask? I say both.
Babe Ruth visited Duluth
. . . in 1926. For the story of that visit see the latest posting at the Reference@Duluth blog.

Should ATVs be allowed on trails within Duluth city limits?
According to an article in today’s DNT, City Councilor Jay Fosle has “introduced a resolution asking city staff to consider the feasibility of opening one or more city trails for ATV use. The resolution is on the consent agenda, which means its passage is virtually assured Monday night.”
PDD Calendar mobile version … you know, for your phone, so you can read it better
Perhaps it’s strange to pick a day when most events are cancelled to make this announcement, but … well, we do things when we get around to them so here it goes: The PDD Calendar now has a mobile version. We actually launched it on Sunday, so maybe you’ve already noticed.
If you view the calendar on a phone, you should automatically see the mobile version. (more…)
Employment at Chester Bowl
Snow making started a couple weeks ago at Chester Bowl. With this snowstorm and the stolen lift chair returned, the hill should be ready to go for the projected December 14 opening date.
Thom Storm, who has operated the ski program at Chester since the 70s, is planning to retire at the end of the 2015 ski season. Clearly, those are going to be some big shoes to fill, and the Chester Bowl Improvement Club is looking to hire someone to begin working with Thom this year.
Also hiring:
ski instructors and snowboard instructors.
Check the links for more info.

Does anybody know who is the “Clough” behind the name of Clough Island?
Happy Holidays from Rubber Chicken and Perfect Duluth Day
Here’s a little ditty from this year’s Rubber Chicken Theater holiday comedy revue — How the Grinch Shut Down Christmas, or, I Saw Rudolph Twerking Santa Claus — featuring Greg J. Anderson, Sharon Dixon Obst and Anders Hultstrom.
Thanks to Dean Vogtman at Happy Tree Productions for the use of his studio, and the fine folks at Beaner’s Central who had to shimmy around our cameras to get across the room.
All outdoor scenes were actually shot outdoors.
