West Duluth Save-a-lot closing
It’s like losing a family member in a stupid way – we got to know the employees and we relied on them for the basic staples.
Save-a-Lot in the Spirit Valley Mall is closing. It sounds like the owner is retiring. Maybe another franchisee will take it over.
East End Tailor
I used to work in West Duluth, and West Duluth Sewing was conveniently accessed. I made a special trip over the last week, and to my disappointment they seem closed – as in not open for business anymore. Anyway – Joanne was great – always happy – she could fix anything: hem pants, repair gear, advise on relationship issues … (more…)
What’s with the new rail cars?!
Did anyone notice some odd-looking rail cars on the train tracks along I-35 this morning? They appear to be of particularly odd shapes and not like anything I’ve seen before in the area. Any info from PDD? I was driving to work so I was unable to snap a quick photo. They sure look mysterious like some type of submarine or large underground tanks.
The attitude 100 years ago
Just a cheesy Dutch Boy Paint greeting card from 1913. The company printed cards with various city names, so Duluth was nothing special. Folks were in for everything back then.
Red Eye Ski Club Duluth Promo
The Red Eye Ski Club of Eau Claire has another trip to Duluth and Lutsen planned. John Ewald was in town earlier this month to shoot this promo video. The song is “Dissolve Me” by Alt-J.

Old Central Clock
Has anyone else noticed that the old Central High School clock has stopped?! I hope it’s going to be fixed. I enjoy hearing the bells ever 15 minutes.
Northern Minnesota Nocturnal Offerings
Video by Mark Ellis; music by Dan Schwartz.
A G2-class geomagnetic storm broke out on Dec. 7, with Northern Lights spilling over the Canadian border into Minnesota and other states.
Driver Pays the Price
Is it true that on a very cold winter day a bus driver was assaulted by a rider? The DTA #2 bus was running late due to I-35 South being closed and traffic running slow due to icy road conditions. A rider waiting for about an hour boarded the bus and allegedly grabbed a phone-like devise and began to beat the driver. The driver was buckled in his seat and thus defenseless so other riders came to his rescue. Did this really happen in Duluth? It’s great to see the customers stepping up and helping their driver. Did anyone witness this?
Wandering dog in Lincoln Park
I came home tonight to a lost dog in our driveway. A golden retriever mix of some sort (smaller for a golden). Golden and white colored. No collar. When we tried to coax her closer, she ran away. I followed her down the block and she tried to take shelter on a porch but bolted when I tried to get a hold to bring her in somewhere warm. She is obviously very scared and it’s too cold for her to be outside tonight. If you are missing a dog, please come look down Restormel Street and the surrounding area. I went for a walk to look for her once I got warmer clothes on but couldn’t find her again.
Lego Robotics in Duluth!
Exciting Lego Robotics are in store this weekend in Duluth. For years I coached my son’s team, but now given he is working as an Aerospace engineer for Honeywell, I will judge Lego Robotics design. In fact, almost every former team member is now working as an engineer. This is a great testimonial for Lego Robotics. Imagine teams of 4 to 8 children (elementary and middle school) programming and designing robots made out of Legos, a small computer and various sensors!

Snow emergencies?
I just don’t get it. When Duluth gets more than a couple inches of snow, we plow one side of the street, and the following Sunday we plow the other. For example, if 13 inches of snow falls on Monday, the parking side remains unplowed until Sunday. You can’t park on the side that was plowed, and the side you must try to park on won’t be plowed for days!
WTF? Is there any logic behind this? Coming from Minneapolis, it’s absolutely bizarre. The “second” plowing happens no matter what — why wait until the following Sunday to do the rest?!
Give or take some of the rules, here’s the reasonable plan.
Ideas for Charity Giving for the Holidays
This year for Christmas my family decided to skip the gift giving and donate to local charities. I’m looking for ideas — whether it’s “adopting” a family for Christmas, donating winter clothes, food shelves, etc. I know there is a lot out there in the Twin Ports I could donate to, but thought I would ask PDDers for ideas that maybe I never thought of. Thanks for your help!
