Skutt Oval Electric Kiln

Skutt Oval Electric Kiln (Phase 3) — Priced to sell!!

Production size (very large) kiln, lightly used. Works great. I do not have any shelves but it does have bottom layer (shelves can be purchased at DH Ceramics last time I was in there I checked).

Like this one: Skutt (But a couple years older.)

Best spot in Duluth to view tall ships

Where’s the best place to watch the tall ships come into the harbor?

It’s official.

I am truly a Northlander. Today, I uttered this sentence:

“I parked all kittywhompus because I was trying not to hit that cat in the alley. Oh, for stupid.”

It only took 9 years.

Coal or Taconite?

A question has been nagging me of late: Which is worth more? Duluth’s taconite pile or Superior’s coal pile?

Finding these images is the extent of my personal research. I’m curious to hear your responses.

Inexpensive, Private Apartment in East Duluth Needed ASAP

Any suggestions or leads would be immensely appreciated. ‘Tis for a friend who needs a place by Sept. 1. One BR or Studio, Section 8 and cat friendly. She is looking for a place to rejuvenate…something mellow with nature around it and not a huge complex of apartments or rowdy students. East end preferred. Thanks, PDD!

Unique outdoor wedding ceremony venues?

I know earlier someone was asking about small wedding reception venues but I have my reception pretty much nailed down for my wedding on June 25, 2011.

My fiancee’ and I want to do an outdoor ceremony. We don’t want to do it at the Rose Garden because its so common and the car/foot traffic doesn’t appeal to us. We’d prefer someplace with a view of the lake but a general view is great! I’d really appreciate the suggestions of the fine PPD people!

School Supplies

I’m wondering if anyone knows of any Twin Ports organizations or businesses that collect school supplies for low-income students or local classrooms. Cleaning out the office yielded a plethora of unopened packages of lined paper, pencils, etc. They won’t be used here, so I figure I’d drop them off if they’re being collected somewhere. Thanks for your help!

Bullsh*t Alert!

“Duluth” Trading Company opens its first retail store. Where, you ask? Mount Horeb, Wis., naturally.

Wildcats in Duluth’s Lester Park?

Last weekend, while enjoying a quiet rest on Lester River about one mile up from the main park, I heard what sounded like a cat hissing, but at 20 times the volume of what you’d hear from a house cat. There were five or six of these “roars” followed by a rustling in the under brush at which point I got the hell out of there. I have heard of bobcat sightings in the area but wonder if it might have been something larger, say a mountain lion? Has anyone else had a similar experience or even a sighting?

Duluth Plaza Super One … Is it just me?

I shop at the Co-op, Cub, and Super One, depending on what I need and where I am at the time. I’ve noticed that the Plaza Super One has much higher prices and lower quality produce than the other Super One stores. There are also fewer healthy product alternatives and generic alternatives at this location. And each time I go there, at least one of the items I buy does not ring up for the advertised sale price.

The cynical side of me wonders if the owners might be consciously taking advantage of the Plaza’s customer base, which appears to be of a lower income than that of their other stores — many of whom don’t have a car to use to get to another store.

Does anyone else share this perception or experience, or is it just me? Because lately I’ve developed a new, highly cynical theory on the human race: People are not essentially good, but they are not inherently evil either;  rather, they are prone to do the wrong thing (or the lazy thing), especially if they think no one is watching or that they won’t get caught.

Cloquet — it doesn’t stink any more

I do hope these people sell their house soon. But if they don’t, I hope they keep posting entertaining ads on Craigslist. I think this one is their second installment.

$189,900 Consider Cloquet
It doesn’t stink any more (best home for sale in the Duluth area)

If they can’t sell their house with ads like this, there’s just no justice in the world.

Do you need a bag for that?

My dog happens to be the least alpha dog there is. He barks rarely. In fact when I got him from Animal Allies I wondered if he had been de-barked because he didn’t bark for 3 days. This morning he barked at something out the front door window.

I went over to look, thinking it could be a delivery person or something. Turns out it is someone who let their dog poop in my front yard and then was walking away from it, not picking it up. I turned on my Minnesota, passive aggressive self, “Excuse me do you need a bag or shovel to help pick that up? I’ve got a trash can right here you can put it in.” (point to trowel and trashcan literally feet from where she is).

Reminder dog owners: pick it up. If you happen to come by my house, feel free to use the doggie trash can perched in the front yard. That’s what it is there for.

Duluth Car Share

Me and a friend are thinking about starting up a car share program in Duluth. Car sharing is useful for those of us who only need a car on occasion — not often enough to justify being solely responsible for the costs of owning one. In a car-sharing group, members split the cost of insurance and repairs, and they all have use of the car(s), signing it out as needed. The program is still in the very, very early stages and right now we’re trying to gauge community interest and brainstorm ideas. Interested? Join our Facebook group!

Time Bank

Does anyone know if there is a Twin Ports Time Bank? (Some places know it as time exchange or other terms.) If not, has there been one and it failed? Any info would be appreciated.

Time Bank is a service exchange where a person will do a job for one person and “bank” time for help from another person for people that might not know what it is. I mow your lawn and you re-shingle my roof. That type of thing.
