Here’s a bit of what you’ll find in this week’s PDD Calendar:
Local vendors sell produce, baked goods and other items at the Hermantown Farmers Market, the Backpacker Magazine Get Out More Tour visits Trailfitters, Kenny Ahern brings his Kaleidoscope show back to the Duluth Public Library, folks can learn about whitetailed deer at Gooseberry Falls, brews and literature are paired up at the Red Herring Lounge, Boku Frequency plays as part of the Chester Creek Concert Series and an adaptation of one of the most beloved action films ever comes to the Zinema.
Downtown Duluth’s Sidewalk Days are happening once again, Red Mountain plays on the pier at Glensheen Mansion, Hermantown is the place to catch live music and grab some suds and grub, glam metal meets Broadway at the Duluth Playhouse, forty artists are featured in the Duluth Art Institute’s outdoor-painting festival, Lake Place Park is the site for two evenings of dance, the Hilltop Obstacle Fun Run goes down at Marshall School and the Bayfront Reggae & World Music Festival returns.

It’s Independence Day, so that means there’s plenty to do, out there: the Mighty Thomas Carnival is offering midway thrills in the DECC parking lot, the Great American Picnic is taking place at Fitger’s, the Duluth Huskies baseball team is battling Willmar at Wade Stadium and the 2016 Fourth Fest offers up a full slate of music and tops it off with the region’s signature fireworks display.
Non-Fourth fun: the 2016 South St. Louis Country Fair, the Duluth Farmer’s Market, a marble-making class at Lake Superior Art Glass, Duluth MakerSpace’s Intro to Hand Plane class, the 2016 Spooner Rodeo, 21 poets reading 21-second-long poems at Duluth Art Institute, the Madeline Island Summer Film Series takes place all weekend, Glitteratti releases a CD, it’s plane-mania at the Duluth Airshow 2016, Trampled by Turtles play another big fat gig at Bayfront Park and it’s Mad Science at the Duluth Playhouse.

Submissions sought for cellphone photo show
The American Indian Community Housing Organization is accepting submissions for its upcoming cellphone photography exhibition titled Let’s See What You See. The only submission requirements are that the photos be taken with a cellphone and shot in Duluth and relate to Duluth.
To submit send a maximum of two images to letsseewhatyousee @ gmail.com. Submission deadline is July 1. The opening reception will be held July 15.

Midnight Movies at 7 – New Film Series at Zinema 2
In August Zeitgeist Arts Cafe and the Duluth Film Collective are launching a new film series: Midnight Movies at 7. The series will focus on cult classics, genre favorites, and films that are so bad they’re great.
First up in the series is Miami Connection, a 1980s tale of ninjas, rock ‘n’ roll, and taekwondo. The film will screen for one night only: Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m.

Wednesday is “no kids allowed” night at World of Wheels Skate Center in Superior, the Duluth Art Institute is saying “thank you” to its members via the annual Art Night Out, Bagley Nature Center is the place to be if you like hiking and/or wildflowers, and it’s Grandma’s Marathon Weekend — which is a great time to get your young whippersnapper involved in racing, or to see a bunch of local and national music acts.

It was singles night, a weekly event in June. The event included $1 Castle Danger beers and entertainment from DJ Trivia. The event included free tickets to local events from KQDS and some locally owned restaurants and some tickets to Tribute Fest (I won three — anyone want to go? Perfect Duluth Day Outdoor Summer Concert Primer 2016
Those who prefer the safe confines of walls and a sturdy roof can check out Kiss or the Beach Boys this summer at Amsoil Arena or David Liebe Hart at the Red Herring Lounge, but ’tis the season for music under canopies or wide open to the elements.
Bayfront Festival Park and Big Top Chautauqua are hosting the usual slew of major acts throughout the summer, along with local music being showcased through smaller concert series, such as the Chester Creek Concert Series and Bayside Sounds at Barker’s Island Pavilion. Duluth-based trilogy on Kindle
My brother Allen and I are releasing three interrelated novellas set in Duluth, on Kindle. The first one is available now, Menno Zwonk: Amish Outlaw. It’s Dylan Fest all week long, and there is no shortage of daily Bob-centric stuff to see and hear. There’s an art opening at Red Mug Coffeehouse in Superior, a new volume of the Duluth Does Dylan series of albums is released during a big ole blowout concert and the Blood on the Tracks express is again ready to rock and roll. And that’s just a few of the things that are going down.
In other, non-Dylan news, people can attend an open house on Superior Street reconstruction plans, Zenith City Cabaret is back in action with its monthly show, the Maxi Childs Trio is out there doing its jazzy-pop thing, comedy titan Louie Anderson stops in town to dispense some hilarity, the public is invited to tour a UMD research vessel, Club Saratoga is the place for Saturday jazz and polka juggernaut Chmielewski Funtime Band swings by Cloquet to school fools in how it’s done.

The seventh annual Duluth Superior Film Festival delivers film, music and art to the Twin Ports region June 1-5. In its short history, the festival has presented a distinctively imaginative and diverse lineup of international, American independent and regional films.

The beer garden occupies a space behind the building that is fully fenced and can be accessed via the parking lot. It features several oversized picnic tables and can seat about 25 people with standing room for about 25 more. (more…)

Carmody Irish Pub celebrates a decade in business with a weeklong celebration, it’s rose-raising season at Leif Erikson Park, the Big Time Jazz Orchestra storms the Rex Bar, the ongoing live radio theater show Take it With You swings back into action, Legacy Glassworks holds its annual 4/20 Spring Blowout with lots of bands and glassblowing demonstrations, the 24th annual Joel Labovitz Entrepreneurial Success Awards are held at the DECC and it’s time once again to get your antiques appraised.
UWS holds its annual Evening of Wine and Jazz, the sixth Design DLH event is centered around the concept of “Minnesota Nice,” St. Scholastica Theatre presents the stalking-themed play Boy Gets Girl, the Lake Superior Zoo hosts a Party for the Planet, it’s Astronomy Day at the Marshall Alworth Planetarium and the classic musical 42nd Street is at the Duluth Playhouse.
New PDD Calendar is up and running today
The new design of the PDD Calendar launched today. There are still a few elements to it that we will be cleaning up over the next few weeks, but it’s time to just let it rip and put it into service.
Why did we switch? When we launched the previous version of the PDD Calendar in 2011 there weren’t any good WordPress plugins for the type of event calendar we wanted. So we built our own. As the years went on, WordPress plugins surpassed our ability to innovate — or at least find the time to innovate — and our calendar was also in need of a design change to match the responsive design of our blog, adjusting to various screensizes for optimal viewing on iPhones and tablets. We decided to make this change over a year ago; finally got around to it now.
Feel free to begin complaining or complimenting the new calendar in the comments, or call/email. Mention problems if you see them, and we’ll either fix them or explain why what you think is broken is really just the best we can do.
We anticipate you will think the new calendar can’t do things the old calendar did, but once you get used to the new navigation you will see that it does. Pretty much every feature the old calendar had the new calendar has, except for the one thing we are working on and the one thing we haven’t thought of. Big changes are afoot at Perfect Duluth Day. It’s the final week of the PDD Calendar‘s current look. Starting Sunday, April 17th, we switch over to our new WordPress platform, which will make adding and viewing events easier and more pleasurable for all. For now, though, get your last gander at the soon-to-be-old-school calendar before it’s scuttled, and check out these upcoming events:
Empty Bowl 2016 is upon us, Big Science warms up for Homegrown with a feast of noise at the Red Herring, Renegade Improv brings the funny to raise money to fight Alzheimer’s, Marshall Performing Arts Center is the place to see the rock musical Spring Awakening, the Duluth Art Institute opens two sports-themed exhibitions and the rocking 60’s get sudsy at UW-Superior.
St. Scholastica Theatre presents the stalking-themed Boy Gets Girl, the Cabin Fever Festival brings a weekend of old-time music to town, the Duluth East robotics team is raising money, the 27th annual Fitger’s 5k Run and Walk takes place on Saturday, over 100 different beers from over 25 brewers can be sampled at the Gitchee Gumee Brewfest and guitarist Christoph Bruhn plays the Teatro Zuccone.

One River, Many Stories gets underway at the DAI with photos and maps and music and more, kids can try a bunch of non-traditional sports at the Heritage Center, the 7th Annual Northland Job Fair returns to help people find work, the Duluth Public Library is the place to learn about Minnesota’s connections to the famously-doomed Titanic (and it’s a swell place for kids to play Minecraft, too) and Shakespeare’s First Folio is celebrated at The Underground.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Mellencamp brings his bag of hits to the DECC, the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga screens for free in Superior, it’s time for clowning around at the DECC with the AAD Shrine Circus, Caroline Smith returns to Duluth to play a show at the Red Herring, the weekly PDD photo feature “Selective Focus” is celebrated, mad science is being dropped at UWS, it’s once again time to celebrate consensual sex with rock music and several local musicians play to fund a greenhouse in West Duluth.
