DECC 50th Anniversary Concert with the Beach Boys and the Temptations
When the Duluth Arena Auditorium opened in 1966, the grand opening featured a speech by Vice President Hubert Humphrey, appearances by Paul Harvey and Lorne Greene, and a performance by Buddy Hackett.
In the half-century that has followed, the harbor-front landmark now known as the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center has expanded several times, including the addition of Amsoil Arena, and become one of the nation’s top convention destinations. The DECC has hosted everything from Elvis Presley and Elton John to classical performers and national hockey championships.
Community open house – Free admission and free parking from 3-6 p.m. Self-guided tours will be available with informational signage throughout much of the facility, plus a collection of original art will be revealed in the concourse depicting memorable concerts in the DECC’s history.
All-employee reunion – Also with free admission and free parking, the reunion is open to anyone who worked at the DECC during the past 50 years – whether for a few months or a few decades – from 3-5 p.m. Former employees can get further information at www.decc.org or on the DECC’s Facebook page. Local residents are encouraged to spread the word to former employees who no longer live in the area.
Beach Boys & Temptations concert – Part of the bands’ “Surf & Soul” tour that has been well received throughout the country, the concert begins at 7 p.m. in Amsoil Arena. As another aspect of the DECC’s 50th anniversary gift to the community, tickets cost $35 and $45 – about half what they’re selling for elsewhere on the tour. Tickets are available at the usual DECC ticket outlets.
Additional information about the 50th anniversary can be found at decc.org.
