R.I.P. Memorial Community Center

The community center building at Memorial Park in West Duluth is no more. The PDD Drone did a fly through on Sunday for posterity.

The building was targeted for removal several years ago. Quoting from Duluth Parks & Recreation’s December 2010 master plan, “Strategies & Actions: Making the Vision a Reality”:

This plan recommends that the building at Memorial Park be demolished and replaced with a 3-season picnic shelter with bathrooms and storage. The green space will be shared by the community and the new Laura MacArthur School, which will also house the community center for the neighborhood.

Below are two photos from October 2013, when the building was still intact.

  1. When we stopped at Goose Berry this weekend, some Indian guy and his brood of 20 were using their drone at the spot that looked like it would’ve been nice to visit, right over the falls, so you had to avoid this whole area unless you wanted to be in his video/ take part in his droney shit-scene. It was then I had a vision of the future of public drone use, aside from their primary purpose of filming naked ladies from second story windows. ‘The horror, the horror…’ I mumbled inaudibly.

The good news is that as Americans grow more sedentary by the day, weaning themselves onto the teat of novelty and convenience, there will be zero drones or people at all the places that are anywhere beyond 50 yards from the “points of interest.” Until five years from now, when they invent the cheap two seater drone, then everyone including grandma and her oxygen tank will be out filming you for prosperity in your once favorite secret nature spots. You won’t even hear her creep up as she yells out, “smile for the camera sweetie!”

  3. I love the new sights the PDD drone is offering! The children’s voices in the video were eerie as they seemed to be coming from the walls.

  5. There is a sign up now that reads: “Future site of Memorial Park Restroom Pavilion.”
