Duluth’s Enger Tower, refurbished

Enger Tower reopened yesterday after three months of concrete patching, roof repairing, repainting, fancy new light installing, etc.

It looks great.

PDD Disinfected. Resume blogging.

Sorry about the little Malware problem earlier today.

I’d tell you what happened, but then I’d have to ask the tech guy and he’d have to explain it to me and, well … it’s a nice day and the problem is solved.

Family Game Night Suggestions

The idea of a “family game night” has gotten some traction in our house — the kids are getting old enough to keep game pieces out of their mouths and “waiting their turn” no longer incites screams or tantrums.  We were at the bookstore at the mall the other day and there were a lot of games that looked pretty fun — but it was a bit overwhelming.  Any suggestions for board-type games under these categories?

(1) family [includes children ages 5 and 7]

(2) party [games played with adults, but not requiring massive amounts of skill or concentration — to be enjoyed during a social, etc.]

(3) children [specifically for children to play amongst themselves (ages 5 and 7)]

Duluth Rap Artist: Theory

Hey everybody, I’ve been looking at this site for awhile now but this is my first post. I realize this may not be the perfect place to promote myself, but I decided to give it a try.

I’m an 18-year-old kid, born and raised in Duluth, and I’ve been making rap for the past couple years. If rap music isn’t your thing, or you’re turned off by the occasional cuss word, then I may not be for you — not trying to offend anyone. But if you’re interested feel free to check me out at either of the following places.  Thanks for your time.

Review of The 39 Steps at the Duluth Playhouse

I won’t go into a lot of detail about the intricately convoluted plot of The 39 Steps, largely because the plot resists description, but also because part of the delight of this cinematic play is to see how it all unfolds. Needless to say, it involves the usual trappings you’d expect of Hitchcockian suspense and film noir: a femme fatale, foreign espionage, and false murder accusations. With a cast of four playing innumerable characters, The 39 Steps lovingly lampoons the genres of noir (and even, at times, screwball comedy), with many winking references to Hitchcock’s oeuvre. Duluth Summer Dance Music Festival

I have been tossing around the idea of wanting to throw a Duluth-based summer dance music festival. This festival would center around the theme of dance tunes and Minnesota (or greater Midwest) musical acts. This would not just include DJs, but a combination of bands, DJs, collectives, and whatever other kind of dance-oriented groups would be interested. (more…)

Books Needed for Children’s Book Drive

Have you been doing some spring cleaning and noticed that you have a lot of children’s books your kids have grown out of?  If so, please consider donating them to United Way of Greater Duluth’s Big Red Bookshelf.  Or, consider donating because you believe in the importance of early interactions with books, stories and reading  for all young children. F*** You, Philip Morris

I just watched this powerful video about a Duluth woman still reeling 10 years on from the death of her young mother to lung cancer. The video was a project created by our friend Amy Berg Louhela for her MFA in photography. Duluthophiles will recognize some of the scenery and maybe even some of the faces. The music is … perfect. I hope they don’t disable the track, but they might, so better listen in now while you can.

Amy is collecting comments for her project so here’s a direct link you can use if you wish to help her that way.

Dark Winter Nights Vol II.

Has the summer heat possibility of it someday being warmer than 70 degrees been getting you down? I thought so, so why not think back to better months and come to my art exhibit of winter photographs this Friday?

The opening runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Duluth Photography Institute. 405 E Superior St. Or for those of you who do better with landmarks, halfway between the walk from Fitger’s to Carmody. I know you’ll be going to one or the other, so you might as well stop in and grab a free cup of cheap wine or good beer.

All the images were created in the dead of night on Zenith City streets and alleyways using World War II camera tech. Make it even more fun and turn the evening into a hip live-action version of “Where in Duluth?”. If you are thinking that “On the shore of Lake Superior!” will get you any points, you won’t.
