Silent movie on a date night in a church?

Who knew ??? with the movie community all abuzz over the French  film, The Artist,”  the first silent movie in 80 years up for an Academy Award, that First Lutheran Church would be “trendy” this Friday night Feb 3 at 7:30 p.m. with the showing of the 1925 silent movie classic “Ben Hur: At Tale of the Christ” with the talented University of Michigan theater organist, Dr. Steven Ball providing some stunning  improvisational musical accompaniment on the church’s world-class pipe organ.   Tickets $10 adult, $5 student.  Join us!

First Lutheran Church’s Ministry Fair & Sunday School Open House

Sunday School Open House
All the Sunday school classrooms will be having an open house on Sunday, Sept. 11, for children, parents, and families to learn more about what is going to be happening in Sunday school this year. Kids can see their classroom, meet their teachers, and do an activity.  Families can also complete registration forms on this day as needed.  Classrooms will be open during the education hour (9:45-10:45 a.m.).  Regular Sunday school classes will begin on Sept. 18.

Ministry Fair Sunday
There will be a Ministry Fair on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Tables will be set up in the Gathering Space and the Upper Commons with great information about the many ministries of First Lutheran Church.

First Lutheran Church Worship in Leif Erikson Park Starts Sunday, July 3

Starting Sunday July 3, 2011, First Lutheran Church in Duluth celebrates 10:00 a.m. Sunday Worship in Leif Erikson Park. All are welcome! Park worship will be held during the months of July and August.

Leif Erikson Park is located on London Road across the church which is at 1100 E. Superior St.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket.  In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the church sanctuary.  Worship will also be held at 8:30 in the church sanctuary.

President of Lutheran World Relief Gives Message at First Lutheran Church Duluth

The Rev. Dr. John Nunes, dynamic speaker, president and CEO of Lutheran World Relief (LWR) will be bringing the message about Lutheran World Relief at worship services at 8:30 a.m. and 110:00 a.m. and adult forum at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 6, 2011.  All are invited to attend.

Haiti EarthquakeVictims Remembrance Wed Jan 12th at First Lutheran

Haiti Earthquake VictimsFirst Lutheran Church Duluth invites all to a day of prayer and remembrance of Ben Larson, his family and all the victims of the Haiti earthquake on the one year anniversary of this disaster.   Organized Prayer times in the church sanctuary will be 8:00-9:00 a.m., 12:00-12:30 p.m., 3:45-4:45 p.m. and 7:00-7:30 p.m.  Bells will be rung at 3:53 pm the time of the earthquake in support of “Bells for Haiti.”  Free will offerings will be accepted for ELCA World Relief efforts in Haiti.  The Sanctuary will be open all day for people to come and pray as their schedule allows.

Benn Judd Larson- son of Pastors April Ulring and Judd Larson

Ben Larson was the son of First Lutheran Church Pastors Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. April Ulring (ELCA Bishop Emeritus) and Associate Pastor Rev. Judd Larson and a seminary student at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.  He died in the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010 while on a mission trip to Haiti with his wife Renee and cousin Jon Larson who were also  seminarians at Wartburg. Listen to Jon and Renee’s recent MPR radio interview on how they’ve rebuilt their lives since this tragedy.   

In the “Bells for Haiti” initiative, Haiti advocates are asking churches, schools, universities, and city halls across the country to toll their bells in unison on the one-year anniversary of the earthquake-January 12, 2011, at 3:53 PM CST-for 35 seconds, the duration of the Haiti quake.  See the “Bells for Haiti” Facebook page and www.flcduluth.org  for additional information.

First Lutheran Church Advent Vespers

What could be more perfect than to take an inspirational break from holiday business and stress? 

Join us at First Lutheran Church on Dec. 8, from 5:30-6 p.m., for a chance to quiet our hectic holiday lives and reflect on the message of Advent in song and story, candlelight and contemplation.  A light meal will be served following this half hour service in the Parish Hall.  Everyone is most welcome!
