This fall at Lake Voice
This fall, Lake Voice News has been going stronger than ever. With each writer pursuing different interests and publishing at least one story a week, we have gathered a lot of different content. A few highlights from this past issue include:

1. On Veteran’s Day, two ROTC cadets stood at attention watching the flag outside UMD, undeterred by freezing weather. Kim Hyatt covers the full story behind their watch, as well as a following up with more information about the 24 hour watch that occurred. A few images from the Woodland Middle School auction
Amid the chaos of the auction, I managed to snap a few shots for posterity. I was only there for an hour, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear this auction went on from 4 p.m. to midnight. There was a lot of stuff, a lot of bidders, and things weren’t going cheaply. Wanna buy an auditorium? A pool?

Duluth, you’re on the air with Vic Damone
As further illustration of PDD’s ridiculous fascination with any reference to Duluth in popular American culture, here’s a clip from last night’s David Letterman monologue on The Late Show.

New music video, directed by Dan Huiting, featuring former Duluthian Haley Bonar. “Last War” is the title track from her next album, coming out in spring 2014.
Perfect Pizza Restaurant: Thirsty Pagan
For half a century, Sammy’s Pizza dominated the local Italian pie scene with its trademark thin crust and tasty sauce. Pizza Lucé came along in 2001 and shook things up with unusual toppings and a funky vibe. These days, however, Thirsty Pagan Brewing has won over pizza connoisseurs in the Twin Ports with its deep-dish pies, loaded with Wisconsin cheese. The TPB was the clear winner in PDD’s best pizza restaurant poll.

As you watch the video, you can use the up-and-down arrows on your keyboard to switch between 16 different “channels” to see 16 different versions. None of the versions are particularly great, but collectively … well … it’s something different anyway.
Duluth reference in The Goodbye Girl
It’s probably been dealt with here before, but Richard Dreyfus (as Elliot Garfield) and Quinn Cummings (as Lucy McFadden) have a conversation at the supper table in the 1977 film The Goodbye Girl and have this exchange:

Red Mountain — “Put Me Through”
Here’s the new video featuring Duluth band Red Mountain. The group’s album Scowl Lightly, will be released by Chaperone Records on Dec. 6.
The dancers are Erin Tope, Maeggie Licht and Grace Holden. The video was produced by Lakefront Films.
This week: break up letters, prepubescent boy singers and mixed martial arts
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
What’s that high pitched sound coming from Sacred Heart tonight? That would be the Vienna Boys Choir.
What would you do if you found a spiral notebook containing a harsh, vindictive and poorly spelled 20 page break up letter? Turn it into a one act play with original music by Brian Ring? That’s what Jonathan Manchester did and Everything You’ve Done That Hurt Me opens this Thursday at the Teatro Zuccone and runs for two weekends.
All the people are going to be “nice-sicle” on Friday for the annual Christmas City of the North Parade and that means, yep, you can start tracking Christmas events on the calendar, including Pepperkakebyen, the Festival of Trees and the opening of Bentleyville, all this week. Leave all the grinchy comments you desire below.
To work off that rage, you can go to Shine Mixed Martial Arts at Clyde Iron on Saturday or go across the bridge and shoot something. Don’t you feel better now?

Woodland School Song
While wondering the halls of Woodland Middle School, I came upon the school song.
The school is slated for destruction in the very near future. I can hardly wait for the Chipotle or other chains that they will force upon us.

Stolen Bicycle: Park Point Break-ins
Hello fellow Duluthians. ‘Tis a sad day on Park Point. It appears another round of robberies has occurred. I had a bicycle stolen out of my garage last night. Pretty ballsy I must say, the thing didn’t even have flat pedals so I am surprised they were able to get off with it. Anywho, if you happen to spot a red Masi Randonneur with a leather saddle, front racks and goofy swept leather handlebars around town, please be so kind as to shoot me a message.

The Northshore streams are starting to ice over. The sunshine of the past few days have made them even more magical. In this short time lapse video taken Thursday afternoon, 10 minutes are reduced to 15 seconds. Enjoy some serenity on Amity Creek.
The Louie Show: Intro and Theme
Here it is, the opening theme to The Louie Show. Thanks to Waferdog for passing along this essential archival VHS treasure from 1996.
There isn’t really any Duluth footage in the opening, other than the big “Duluth” sweatshirt Louie sports.
Goodbye, Woodland Jr.
Last chance to visit Woodland Middle School this weekend. Classic junior high 1980s memories of fashion issues and general awkwardness. And lots of “going out with people” started and ended often via notes.

“Christmas City” 45 for sale on eBay to support Bentleyville Tour of Lights
Security Jewelers is auctioning off a mint condition 45 of Merv Griffin’s “Christmas City,” the song recorded 50 years ago to promote the Christmas City of the North Parade. Check it out on eBay. The proceeds are being donated to Duluth’s Bentleyville Tour of Lights — America’s largest free, walk-through Christmas lighting display.
Amy and Dave Freeman’s Big Adventure
Amy and Dave Freeman of Grand Marais are among ten finalists for National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year. The couple paddled, dogsledded, and hiked 11,647 miles across North America from April 22, 2010 to April 4, 2013.
Instead of work holiday party, seeking volunteering ideas
That awkward holiday work party — where no one really wants to go, but feels obligated. Well, we want to do something different this year and need ideas! Last year, instead of apps and drinks while milling about awkwardly, we got to do a blitz build with Habitat for Humanity. It was a blast, and it really brought us together, while helping a family in need. Do you have any ideas for this year? There would be roughly 16 of us, and we would want to be able to work together for the most part. We could take a half day to work, or even a couple hours. The tough thing would be to try to schedule this activity on a Monday-Friday, sometime around the holiday season. Any suggestions welcome!
Northern Lights Over Hawk Ridge
This past Sunday night the Northern Lights shown over Duluth. This photo was taken at about 2:30 a.m. from the Hawk Ridge Viewing Platform. Hawk Ridge is a great place for watching the Aurora Borealis as the viewing platform gives an unobstructed view of the northern and northeast skies over rolling hills with very few lights to ruin the experience.

Old Howard Mill and the (Possibly) Incendiary Howard Boys
Back in 2009, some folks on PDD wondered about the Old Howard Mill Road, where it went, and who the heck the Howards were. I just wrote an article that sheds some light on that subject, for your reading pleasure.

Duluth Guitar Instructor Recommendations
My husband and I just moved to Duluth and want to start taking guitar lessons after the holidays. Our interests are rock, blues, and traditional country, both acoustic and electric. We took lessons for a little while a zillion years ago, but need to start over at the beginning. Proficiency in guitar is on our lifetime to-do lists, so we need to get going on that. Who do you recommend? Thanks.
