Dwight’s Point Sea Kayak Paddle
The St. Louis River Alliance and UMD Recreational Sports Outdoor Program (RSOP) collaborate for an afternoon of exploring the newly-designated St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail. Participants will paddle along towering white pines on steep clay embankments, passing lily pads in bloom and birds basking in their summer quarters. A cast of kids, ages 12-18, and local Duluth artists will put on the Shakespearian favorite, A Midsummer Night's Dream, in a one-of-a-kind, two-week theatrical experience. Since 1993, Wolf Ridge has been a site for a long-term international study to learn about the lives and health of migratory songbird populations. Visitors can observe these birds up-close and learn about the banding process and bird research. Meet at the Forest Ecology Building. Open to all ages. Banding will be canceled on rainy days.

Craig Blacklock will be speaking about his newest exhibit, Within the Wave, which opens on July 26. Blacklock’s photography has always been a testament to the breathtaking beauty and complexity of nature, particularly the interface of land and water in wilderness areas. In this new exhibit, his works capture the essence of Lake Superior’s reflective surfaces and is divided into four evocative movements: Light Waves, Dream Waves, Encroachment and Lamentations.

This class will focus on teaching participants the basics and the how-to of identification of plants and fungi. It is a beginner-level course for those who may be too nervous to try wild plants and mushrooms or for someone who needs guidance in identification. The focus will be on wild edible plants, but foraging can also include searching for fibers, weaving materials, and other craft supplies. The class will meet at Chambers Grove at the pavilion.

Northern Exposure Art presents this class, in which participants will complete a 16x20" canvas and learn to paint basic landscape imagery with a combination of acrylic techniques. Covered are various color-mixing, brush techniques and texture demonstrations. No experience required, but it is recommended. All materials are provided. Registration required. Class will take place on Brighton Beach on Lake Superior.

In this workshop participants learn the basics of punch needle rug hooking while working on a small project. Registration includes instructions and a complete punch need project. Attendees should bring a small pointed scissor. The instructor will provide an Oxford punch needle ($32) and a frame and cover for student use during class. These materials will be available for purchase after the class.

The Duluth Folk School hosts a guided Forest Bathing walk for people ages 18 and older. During this walk participants will have the opportunity to slow down and carefully observe their senses. Inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin yoku, Forest Bathing has been scientifically proven to boost immune strength, reduce stress, and improve cognitive functioning.
