Open Studio is a flexible space designed for artists to make connections and foster growth in the local art community. Artists are encouraged to bring their artwork in any medium to create in the studio. In this supportive community space, artists can socialize or focus on their creations. Focus on various decorating techniques and learning the DAI studio glazes while also experimenting with making items. This eight-session class allows six weeks to do tests and make wetwork. Every class will end with a gas Cone-10 firing and an electric Cone-7 firing. Students are encouraged to work outside of the arranged class time. In this class, students will learn about creating lamps and luminaires from thrown and handbuilt clay vessels. Ashley Hise will share her process of throwing, altering and coil building as well as cover glazing techniques for textured surfaces in electric kiln firing. Students will be shown a variety of artists who work with clay and light for inspiration. Some experience with clay is recommended. Adam Swanson’s acrylic painting class is intended for painters of all skill levels. Attendees can explore both group and personal projects, learning techniques such as color mixing, glazing and impasto. With hands-on demonstrations, attendees are prompted to create a piece that fits their style. The registration deadline is Dec. 21. Admission is $190 for Duluth Art Institute members, or $220 for non-members. Attendees must be age 16 or older.
