Instead of work holiday party, seeking volunteering ideas
That awkward holiday work party — where no one really wants to go, but feels obligated. Well, we want to do something different this year and need ideas! Last year, instead of apps and drinks while milling about awkwardly, we got to do a blitz build with Habitat for Humanity. It was a blast, and it really brought us together, while helping a family in need. Do you have any ideas for this year? There would be roughly 16 of us, and we would want to be able to work together for the most part. We could take a half day to work, or even a couple hours. The tough thing would be to try to schedule this activity on a Monday-Friday, sometime around the holiday season. Any suggestions welcome!
Duluth Guitar Instructor Recommendations
My husband and I just moved to Duluth and want to start taking guitar lessons after the holidays. Our interests are rock, blues, and traditional country, both acoustic and electric. We took lessons for a little while a zillion years ago, but need to start over at the beginning. Proficiency in guitar is on our lifetime to-do lists, so we need to get going on that. Who do you recommend? Thanks.
Duluth Woodworking Club
There is a small woodworking club here in town that started last fall. It had a good amount of interest and we had a handful of meetings and demos over the winter. There was a hiatus over the summer and now it’s time to get things going again.

Recommendations for Duluth moving companies?
I’ll be leaving Duluth later this month, moving to Minneapolis, and next week will begin to get quotes from local companies. My plan is to have the movers pack and move everything from my small apartment. Can anyone recommend any particular company for me to look into?
Band Practice Space in Duluth?
My new band is not able to practice anymore in the basement we were using. We are starting to look elsewhere for a place to practice. We already know about the Clubhouse. We are waiting to find out if there will be an opening. Does anyone know anywhere else we can ask? We are loud so we obviously need a place that doesn’t care about that or is soundproofed.

Minerva Zine Day
I publish a free feminist zine every few months and distribute it around Duluth and Superior. I’ve never posted on PDD before about it so I thought I’d try to spread the word. You can find Minerva zines around town at places like Duluth Coffee Co., Electric Fetus, Jitters, Pizza Lucé, Double Dutch, Carmody Irish Pub, Thirsty Pagan Brewing and Red Mug Coffeehouse.
The goal of Minerva is to empower women, educate, and encourage consciousness raising on issues relevant to us by the use of art, collage, images, and words. We strive to promote women to share and value their writing about individual stories and diverse experiences.
If you have more questions or are curious about our fringe publication (with very limited funds and copies), please check out minervazine.com. Peace.
Good restaurant with good wine
I know where to go for good beer and food in the area, but not so much anymore where to go for good wine and food. I know Bellisio’s touts its wine selection. What else is there? Lake Avenue Cafe? Va Bene? Others? I like places that make an effort to feature local, sustainable and organic food.
Best Twin Ports Dining Deal Rooms
Can the PDD faithful help me find some private dining “deal room” options in the Twin Ports?
I’m tapped out on my short list of places to broker deals with customers and vendors. I often need to have a quiet area for two to six people to conduct business over a working lunch.
Some deals are very casual and low key, some not as much. Some are software demos and require a screen and projector — these are not very high-brow affairs, so …
Serve me up some critiques on food, atmosphere, memorable experience and privacy please.
Perfect Duluth Soda?
So, I make Fizzy Waters a regular stop while I am in Canal Park, but it’s not the only place I get tasty sodas. (more…)

So much fun to swim here. Go to Perkins on London Road, cut down to lake, go 50 yards to the right.
Electrician Recommendation?
At the risk of incurring Herzog’s ire regarding boring posts (as recently and memorably recorded in ‘The Current’ recent posting), can anyone recommend a good electrician, or steer me away from a bad one?
P.S. Herzog, I will try harder next time to not be boring, I promise. I just don’t want my house to burn down with faulty wiring, etc.
Gluten-free Beer Growlers in Duluth
Can someone clue me in to which of our many local breweries offer anything gluten free? My out of town sister wants to bring a growler or two up north.
Home cleaning services in Duluth
I’m looking for recommendations for a cleaning person/service in the Chester Park area. I’m leaving for Air Force basic military and technical training in October and will be gone through February. I’d like to make things as easy on my family as possible while I’m gone. Do you use these services or know someone who does? Who do they use and what do they like about them? What kind of household chores are best for them? Would it be laundry, dishes, litterbox, sweeping and mopping? You tell me. Any input would be great!
I’m also looking for someone to clean the carpets before I leave.
Duluth Stucco Repair
I’m looking for someone to repair stucco cracks on the exterior of my 1924 house. It seems surprising to me that there aren’t more specialists here in Duluth, considering the number of stucco houses. Can anyone recommend a stucco repair person who does quality work?
Beach House Wedding Rental Advice
I’m looking for some help. My partner and I are looking to get married in the summer of 2015, at the beach on Park Point. We are trying to find out if anyone on PDD has gotten married in a rental house along the beach or have any suggestions you could share. I’m not even sure if it would be allowed. We really want to go the rental house route because it is more intimate and can be cheaper than a resort and less limiting on the hours we can be there (i.e. 9pm cutoff for the Park Point Beach House). Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have!!
Chef Yee’s serving it up at Foster’s
Life just got even better on the hill — I discovered Chef Yee’s is serving up his fare Wednesdays and Thursdays at Foster’s on Arrowhead Road. I ate there tonight for the first time. It was delicious, fresh and quick — ah, just like we remembered! Paired well with a Great Lakes Brewing Co. Edmund Fitzgerald tap! Even my hubby who isn’t a Chinese food fan gave it rave reviews. We’ll be back!
Bees!
Please help! We’re having a fence installed, and the workers were pounding a post near the garage when a steady stream of bumble bees started coming out of the ground. It’s fantastic! I’m thrilled to know that we are hosting these amazing little creatures. However, the fence workers want us to fumigate the hive before they continue working. We will not do this. So … any ideas? We won’t have the blood of a hundred bees on our hands.
50-cent soda pop machines in Duluth
“One soda … 12 ounces. Fifty sen! Sold. It’s been a pleasure frequenting your establishment.”
–Michael Douglas as William “D-Fens” Foster in the 1993 movie Falling Down
I noticed recently that Twin Ports Cyclery in the West End has a pop machine inside that charges 50 cents, which is the amount that should be forever recognized in the U.S. Constitution as the official price for a can of carbonated water, citric acid and corn syrup.
I’m wondering if there are any other 50-cent soft-drink machines around town. Please note them in the comments.
I know the Last Place on Earth probably still has its 40-cent (or was it 45?) machine, but even at that price it hardly seems worth it to go in there, and the place is shut down right now anyway … or has it reopened again? I can’t keep up. Please consider all questions in this paragraph to be rhetorical.
Oh, and I don’t want to hear about any 55-cent machines. Might as well be a dollar.
