Instead of work holiday party, seeking volunteering ideas

That awkward holiday work party — where no one really wants to go, but feels obligated. Well, we want to do something different this year and need ideas! Last year, instead of apps and drinks while milling about awkwardly, we got to do a blitz build with Habitat for Humanity. It was a blast, and it really brought us together, while helping a family in need. Do you have any ideas for this year? There would be roughly 16 of us, and we would want to be able to work together for the most part. We could take a half day to work, or even a couple hours. The tough thing would be to try to schedule this activity on a Monday-Friday, sometime around the holiday season. Any suggestions welcome!

Last year as part of our holiday party, my boss had all 38 employees don Santa hats and small gifts of carnations and chocolate (healthy, I know) and we went to Chris Jensen right after their breakfast time and sang Christmas carols to the residents and passed out the gifts.

Now I never sing in public (without the help of adult beverages anyway), but the residents don't care how good you sound, they just love to have visitors.

If you contact any nursing home they usually have an Activity department or staff that would be happy to help you set something up. You don't have to sing, the residents like to play games and just interact with other human beings. Some have no family left or in the area and the holidays are a lonely time.

As a regular volunteer with Second Harvest Great Lakes Food Bank I'd like to suggest that your group give it some help. Second Harvest is a nonprofit and the sole distributor of surplus food products to over 120 charitable food programs, including our region's soup kitchens, food shelves and shelters. It's a great place to volunteer any time of the year.
