From the Ripsaw Archive: April 5, 2000
Ten years ago today, the first weekly issue of the Ripsaw came out. Looking it over this morning, the thing that surprised me is there was a localized crossword puzzle. I had forgotten about that. It only lasted a few months because the guy who did it, Israel Malachi, either got tired of putting it together or left town for a while, I can’t remember which.
Anyway, the puzzle is below. It’s pretty easy, but I’ll follow up with the answer key in the comments tomorrow.
It’s going to be all my fault
I’m thinking of taking my grill out of the garage today. Expect a blizzard this weekend. Sorry.
I’m also taking the plastic off my windows. So there should be at least three feet of snow on the ground by Easter morning.
New Taxi Rule in Duluth
Attention Duluth cab customers: From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. you have to either pre-pay or prove you have the ability to pay before the cab driver will begin the trip.

Pineapple Art and Supply Center
A group of local artists opened Pineapple Art and Supply Center last month. They bought the inventory from Bohemia Arts, which is out of business.
The new store is at 124 W. First St. in Downtown Duluth. The grand opening is Saturday, March 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Duluth’s Oneota Football Squad – 1915
I’m not sure if these are junior high students from Oneota School or if they are high school kids and this is a community team for the Oneota neighborhood (part of West Duluth). Denfeld didn’t have an official football team until 1917.
I don’t know the names of any of the players, except the guy sitting cross-legged in the middle — he’s my great uncle, Sam Brassard. (Yep, Uncle Sam.)

Cross City Trail — A photo tour of the proposed section from Clyde Park to the Lakewalk
In a Feb. 18 post the maps for the proposed Cross City Trail – which will connect the Munger Trail to the Lakewalk – were laid out, with photos showing the various route options for the westernmost section shown in the comments. A Feb. 28 post showed a photo tour of the middle section of the proposed trail.
In this post, the route options for connecting Clyde Park to the Duluth Lakewalk are shown. Here are the maps to follow along with:

Colder gets older
Colder by the Lake‘s “Older by the Lake,” a comedy about aging, opens this Thursday night at Teatro Zuccone.
In the pic: Cathy Podeszwa, John Schmidt, Christa Schulz, Jack Setterlund and Gary Kruchowski. They guarantee the show will be “more fun than a barrel of reading glasses.”
This post is being published early on Sunday morning for a reason. The first person to write a comment on this wins two tickets to the opening night show (Thursday, March 11, 7:30 p.m.). It’s a reward for being up early on a Sunday and reading about oldness.

“Theives Like Us” – Duluth screenings

“Thieves Like Us” is a feature-length action comedy (Jackie Chan style) made for about $3,200. There are two screenings at the Duluth Playground — March 5 and 6 at 7:30 pm.
The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the director, Jarrod Crooks, and actor/producer Daniel Quaile of St. Paul-based Film Under 5, a production company with the goal of showing “that if you get creative, write a good story, and work your butt off, you can make a feature film for under $5,000.”
Cross City Trail: The Proposed Middle Segment
In a Feb. 18 post the maps for the proposed Cross City Trail — which will connect the Munger Trail to the Lakewalk — were laid out. In the comments I included photos of the various route options for the westernmost section.
The middle section of the trail — from Ramsey Street to Clyde Park — has only one option, so there’s not a lot to seek feedback on, but I thought I’d shoot some photos anyway.
This bridge is actually NOT part of the proposed trail; I just like that a tree is growing through it.
Mexico Lindo sign is up at Fitger’s
I noticed last week that the sign is up outside the Fitger’s Brewery Complex for the Mexico Lindo restaurant. Any word on an opening date? Anyone?
In other Mexico Lindo related news, don’t go to the Cloquet location on Friday. I’m predicting the place will be packed like never before. Denfeld plays Hermantown for the Section 5A hockey championship at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center at 7 p.m. I’m sure I’m not the only one planning a pregame meal.
Journalistic Integrety at Stake, part 2
Personally, I didn’t care much about the accuracy of Jeff Tweedy quotes in various media, but I believe I’ve found a media issue of the utmost importance to our society.
In the Duluth News Tribune’s report about Superior High School wrestler Nikola Bogojevic winning the state championship in his weight class, this paragraph jumped out at me:
Moments later he grabbed Superior coach Bill Gedde and put him in an airplane spin — made famous by professional wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper — to celebrate the title.
Since when did Roddy Piper make the airplane spin famous? I remember Mike Rotunda using it as his signature maneuver in the 1980s, but I don’t remember ever seeing Piper do it. I mean, I suppose it happened, but I just don’t associate that move with Piper.
Am I right here?
By the way, congratulations to Bogojevic for his victory, his awesome season, and most of all putting his coach in an airplane spin. That’s epic.
Slow? Who you callin’ slow?
PDD is working normally for me and pretty much everyone else I’ve asked, but at least one person says it’s been enormously slow for a few days now. Is anyone else experiencing this? If you are, it should take two minutes for the page to load allowing you to comment, so thanks for taking the time to let us know.
Right now we’re assuming everything is fine and one person’s computer hates this site for some reason.

It struck me as a little odd a few days ago when a post on PDD announced the creation of Daily Duluth Photo. “Hasn’t that been around for a while?” I thought to myself.
Now the situation has been cleared up in the comments to that post. The previously existing site I was thinking of is Duluth Daily Photo, not Daily Duluth Photo.
Goodness gracious. I don’t think I can handle two photos a day.
