Possible wine bar!?!?!?

I thought I read in the Tribune that there may be a wine bar moving in downtown? Does anyone know about this? That would be awesome if it did. The wine crowd in Duluth seems to be regulated to the Gitch wine club and a few fellow wine drinkers. If anyone knows anything about this, I would be interested.

If I remember right, it was Rod Raymond and his partner looking to put a wine bar in the basement of the Old Town Hall.

There is Bellisio’s as well as Midi and Chester Creek Cafe. But one more couldn’t hurt!

Wow, this town is getting cooler and cooler! I love my neighborhood wine bar at Chester Creek Cafe, it’s like Cheers. . . it’s very cozy and the wines are always fabulous.

And that new Norwegian topless place.

  5. TopOfTheHillMan on November 13, 2009 at 3:19 pm

ahhh, I beleive that is TAPPIS, Adam… Chester Creek/At Sarah’s Table is fab. Love it after a UMD event or a concert. Always quiet and although the selection is small wines are good. ALTHOUGH (are you reading this At Sarah’s Table owners?) they close too early. You don’t need to stay open until 2am (although…) but at least 11?!?!? Just late enough for a post concert cab…

Another place for Rocket Rod the Bod to hit on women! How cool is that!

Ok yes I read that (we close too early).
Our wine bar rush seems to be over at around 7:30.
But we do have a new person (Charity) who is booking some music.
What time do you feel is prime wine bar time?

    This post needs more punctuation.

I’ve heard rumors that the parents of a certain VIP on this board have a very wide selection of MD 20/20. It’s not exactly Sarah’s Table, and there’s no topless Norwegians, but for West Duluth it ain’t to shabby.

The new owners of Lake Avenue Cafe’ will be installing a bar soon.

  11. Bret on November 14, 2009 at 10:15 am

Tell me more about this new ownership of Lake Avenue Cafe of which you speak.

  12. Paul Lundgren on November 14, 2009 at 10:24 am

The new owners of Lake Avenue Cafe are Mark Swenson, Derek Snyder and Michael Schraepfer.

  13. vicarious on November 14, 2009 at 10:25 am

Derek Snyder, Mark ??, and Micheal “Cheeks” Schrempfer are the new owners.

Mark and Derek are doing the day-to-day thing.

Derek is a wine/food freak. Mark is a manager-extraordinaire, and Cheeks can build/fix anything.

I helped them remodel last week…you should stop in and check it out, it’s beautiful. The tables are gorgeous reclaimed wood from Duluth Timber; hand cut, sanded, and biscuit-jointed.

The menu will be slowly changing. Don’t worry, though – the favorites from the old menu will be kept.

There will soon be a rock-base lunch counter, as well as a 6-8 seat bar in the back corner.

Thanks! Is this the “Lake Effect Restaurant” – the concept that was planned for next to the Fetus? In any event, it sounds great. I may drive down and check it out this weekend.

From 2006 PDD: ” I am happy to announce that this fall I, Vicarious and my partner Derek Snyder, will be opening a new restaurant next to to Fetus Vinyl Room. It will be called The Lake Effect, and will serve Old World, high-quality (local, organic when possible) French and Italian fare with a modern, regional flair. Our chef is coing from Portland, our wines from Italy and France, and our desserts from heaven. We will have a small bar with 8 barstools and 15-18 tables, plus outdoor HEATED seating. Stay Tuned!”

Damn, Duluth is getting cooler and cooler by the day! Good luck to this new venture. Lake Ave Cafe is the very first restaurant Mr. Calk and I dined at when we moved to the Twin Ports many moons ago, so it has a special place in my heart.

  16. vicarious on November 14, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Yep, it’s Lake Effect. Not sure yet if the name will change from Lake Avenue Cafe.

  17. vicarious on November 14, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Sorry to have sorta high-jacked the thread…

  18. Chris on November 14, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Didn’t realize that a PDD regular was involved when the new owners came and talked to the city liquor board a couple months back about the transfer of the license. The changes you guys are making sound pretty exciting. Good luck!

  19. vicarious on November 14, 2009 at 3:28 pm

I’m only involved on the periphery, helping out where I can.

  20. mk on November 14, 2009 at 8:32 pm

    Okay wait, I’m confused.

So new owners to LAC. Are they opening a second location (different name) next to the Fetus while keeping the location at DeWit Seitz?

    I love this town.

  21. vicarious on November 14, 2009 at 9:22 pm

OK. There are new owners of LAC. One of the new owners of LAC was going to open a restaurant next to the Fetus. Instead, he partnered with Mark and Cheeks and bought LAC.

Carla, an 11 pm would be nice. We tend to go out after 9 pm as that’s when the younger boy is in bed and the older boy is now responsible enough to stay home with him. We stopped by one night about 10 minutes after you closed (9:10 pm??? Don’t remember for sure.) But 11 pm would capture that post UMD theater/concert crowd also. If you had live music, all the better.

  23. Calk on November 15, 2009 at 1:18 pm

CCC wine bar had live music several times last summer, it was pretty fabulous. I hope they do try to have live music in there this winter.

  24. Bret on November 15, 2009 at 3:36 pm

I caught Lisa Kane playing her great music at CCC a month or so ago. Good stuff!

  25. gingerbliss on November 16, 2009 at 6:24 am

Hey Carla, I think later is better too, and Lisa Kane was awesome at the CCC. I love the wine bar there, but it could be open later. What would you do for food though? Kitchen closes at 9.

  26. Topofthehillman on November 17, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Clara! You do listed to your peeps! 11 PM would be good. 12(the later you’re open the more I drink!)would be divine. I love your wine bar. Small. Intimate. Perfect apres’ symphony, UMD event, Matiness Musciale, etc etc, etc venue. and for anyone who lives east, its on the way home! Could you do a few snacks and freeze them and the bartender could mircrowave them? Stuffed mushrooms come to mind-freeze well, BTW…) I wanted to have my 50th birthday there, but alas friends surprised me with another venue.
