Vikings Fumble

Well, I don’t really follow football, and now here’s another reason to despise the world 0f big, corporate sports. Message sent and received–athletics is a place where freedom of speech will kick your football on down the field. Boo team Vikings!

Chris Kluwe’s release by Vikings sends message that gay-marriage talk is not tolerable in NFL

Kluwe was a punter in 126 games for the Vikings. And he was average at best last year. That's second all-time behind Greg Coleman (138). A punter's time comes. Eight years is along run. Third? Mitch Berger, 90 games.

Packers fan, davids?

The Vikings have three first round draft picks to pay. Kluwe was due to be paid about $1.5 million this year, coming off a year that was, as spy1 put it, "average." That's sports business, not a violation of freedom of speech.

I hope Kluwe winds up somewhere soon (and I'm sure he will). Professional sports need more athletes like him who will help break down barriers.

I've read that Zigi didn't have a problem with Kluwe speaking out off the field. It was on the field that he wanted more from him.

I love how the hidden agenda is the big story here. Not Kluwe's below average stats.

Kluwe was not cut because of his stance on gay marriage. Far from it.

The distraction he causes with some of his outspokenness in general might have played a small part in the decision, but it had nothing to do with his stance on gay marriage and characterizing it as such is very irresponsible.

Kluwe has been dropping off lately in his stats, and is statistically in the bottom-third of punters in the NFL for the past few years while being near the top 5 in pay.

The Vikings have repeatedly supported Kluwe and his stance on the matter for the past few years. Why would they wait two years to cut him if they didn't like his views and the way he was expressing them?

By the way, I am a strong supporter of equal rights and a fan of Kluwe on and off the field.

I know zero about football. But Chris Kluwe is my hero for his vocal stance on gay rights.

All politics aside, it was my understanding that he wasn't performing as a consistant punter. I understand the fact that even though he's fucking awesome everywhere else (humanist gamer geek!), it doesn't make for good football if he can't kick well.

Looks like Kluwe will end up in Oakland.
