Sorry for the short notice, but Erin Hudson‘s work will be screening at Beaner’s on Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
Erin is a documentary filmmaker who is concerned, committed, and passionate about storytelling. Her films give voice to the people we sometimes miss in the frenzied blur of 21st century society – the life of a female trucker, the vision of a rural photographer, or the quiet dignity of getting old.

How Low can they go? There will be two performances by Low. Both are free, but limited space requires that patrons pick up a ticket at one of the Zeitgeist Arts venues prior to the celebration. (UPDATE: Tickets to both Low shows are sold out).

PAVSA’s 29th Annual Art Auction will take place on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Duluth. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the silent auction set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Following will be the live auction, featuring pieces donated by local artists. An additional highlight will be the dessert auction, with fine cheesecakes, chocolate delights, and other delectable desserts up for bid. Appetizers and hors d’oeuvres will be served throughout the evening. Tickets for the Art Auction are $50 each.
At the 2009 Art Auction, PAVSA will be honoring individuals through three awards. Receiving the 2009 Community Ally awards will be Coral McDonnell and Officer Robert Carter. Coral McDonnell has been actively involved as an advocate in the sexual assault and domestic violence movements since for more than three decades. She worked with the Domestic Abuse Intervention Program for many years and has served on the PAVSA Board of Directors since 2006.
Also receiving the Community Ally Award is Investigator Robert (Bob) Carter, a long-time patrol officer and former member of the Duluth Police Sex Crimes, Abuse and Neglect Unit. Officer Carter, who passed away in August, was committed to ending sexual violence and was a leader in addressing the issue of trafficking of adolescent girls in our community. Bob was also an avid photographer and donated his work to the PAVSA Art Auction.
PAVSA’s Artist of the Year Award will honor artists Michael Tonder and Jody Freij-Tonder, co-owners of Blue Skies Glassworks. Michael and Jody have been longtime donors to the PAVSA Art Auction, and we are pleased to recognize them for their environmentally conscious sculptures, stained glass, and fused glass pieces.

On Sat. Dec. 5 Washington Studios Artist’s Co-op is hosting “It’s a Wonderful Life” a three-tiered event with a members’ show in the Washington Gallery, All-day entertainment schedule, and handmade arts and crafts in the halls outside the gallery. We still have spots available for artists of all sorts, our main stipulation is that your art/craft must be handmade. It’s going to be “A Wonderful Time!”

Jason Wussow and Dan Dresser, the guys who made the movie Cooking on the Car, are taking their mobile kitchen on the road again soon. They’re hoping to challenge Jay Leno to a cook off – putting their Toyota Camry up against one of Leno’s fancy schmancy cars. Or maybe Conan is still driving his Taurus.
Cooking on the Car will also be showing this Saturday at that Zinema.

National Novel Writing Month, of course!! For the month of November, join the masses of delusional word hungry authors-to-be in writing a complete novel–50,000 words! Winners, and participants, get to savor the victory of embarking on a crazy journey that will leave others slack jawed and amazed.

Once again, Superior Street is coming out in full-force this Halloween night, and will undoubtedly be lined with zombies, sluts, slutty zombies, and probably even a Balloon Boy or two. Every bar in town has a “Halloween bash” and costume contest, of course. But here are a few events I’m aware of that sound like they’ll rise considerably above the average Halloween party, which is something when you consider that even the average Halloween party is pretty choice.
Feel free to leave any events I’ve missed in the comments, and I’ll add them to the list. They don’t have to be in Downtown Duluth or even in Duluth at all for that matter.
Most of all, have fun, be safe, and let’s all hope the lights don’t go out again this year.
