Patty Cake Cakes?
Help – it’s a birthday cake emergency!
Does Patty Cake Cakes still exist? I know they were selling out of the Piedmont Milk House, but they’re no longer there. Does anyone know of another cake-baker who makes a german chocolate cake like Patty Cake’s?

I believe they (she) are operating on a limited basis in Piedmont out of a gas station/convenience store. I think their selection is limited and most of it might be order only and this is the pick up location.
Evidently Retha and Sandy’s sweet shop in Coon Rapids is an offshoot of Patty Cake. I called the number associated with Patty Cake Cakes, and it was disconnected. Sorry.
Some background for those out of the loop:
The Patty Cake Shop was a favorite bakery in Duluth for many, many years. It was located at 1434 E. Superior St. and closed about 10 years ago.
Gretchen Soetebier was the owner when it closed. She bought the shop from her father, Jack Soetebier.
Elsie and Alfred Soetebier, both natives of Germany, founded the Patty Cake Shop in 1949.
Loved that place as a kid.
I like to imagine that Paul doesn’t even have to look things like that up. Someone says, “patty cake,” and he instantly starts spitting that knowledge out. Like those stupid Microsoft search engine ads, only cool.
I equate Paul Lundgren to Encyclopedia Brown, only without the mystery.
For Patty Cake cakes and cookies, call Gretchen Soetebier at 218.461.6550 or see Gretchen Soetebier on Facebook.
Awesome! Thank you!!!
