Make Art, Protect Water

Last year, a group of musicians came together in Duluth to record a compilation album titled Industry. Peace. Environment. to raise awareness about sulfide mining and the permanent changes that upcoming decisions could have on the landscape they love. The album features original recordings by Charlie Parr, Snöbarn, the Murder of Crows and many others. The Arrowhead Story, a collective of creative folks interested in sharing the stories of land in Northern Minnesota, is issuing a call for art to adorn the album. Submissions can be in any medium, and should reflect a theme of tension between nature and industrial development. The submission deadline is June 27. For details and submission information, contact Deanna at everyrivertothesea (at) gmail.com.

The Industry. Peace. Environment. album release party will be on Sept. 7, with a pre-release show at Beaner’s Central on July 20.

Punk show at the Flotsam Lounge

In the unmarked Flotsam building in downtown Duluth, punk-show goers treaded lightly on the pilewood flooring as they ventured down the decrepit steps and into the basement of this rock den. Now this, was a punk venue. The dimly lit corner of the room had just enough space for the essential gear of the bands and oozed the perfect ambiance as shadows of fans flickered across the brick walls. Here are some photographs from Friday night featuring Red Mountain (Duluth), the Ancient Gods (Houston, Texas) and Dead Dog (Athens, Georgia)

Will Charlie Parr and Trampled by Turtles meet for tea in London?

While researching an article that appears in the July issue of Lake Superior Magazine, which is on newsstands now, I noticed something interesting on the European tour schedules for Charlie Parr and Trampled by Turtles.

Read the excerpt below for the tidbit, and start planning your trip to London to get acquainted with the Duluth music scene. And pick up a copy of the magazine to get the full scoop on our local sensations.

Tour the Music Resource Center

Let Nancy take you on a tour of the Music Resource Center and learn more about what goes on here. If you like what you see and would like to help us make it better you can donate online. Time is running short; we need to reach our goal by Friday! Please help if you can!

PlayList visit from MRC musicians = cool/donate

Hannah and Curren, two musicians who have benefited from the Music Resource Center, were on The PlayList last week — young people doing their thing and being articulate and cool — what more can we ask for?

After you watch them talk about what they do, go here and donate to the Indiegogo campaign to make more of their and other young musicians’ work happen here in Duluth and Superior. The campaign ends in a little over a week — help them now if you can.

Video Archive: The Hospital People

This recently unearthed clip from KDLH-TV’s Newschannel 3 This Morning, features the Hospital People performing the song “Crash” in support of their April 2003 Geek Prom gig at the NorShor Threatre.

There is nothing quite like rawking and spaz dancing at 6 a.m. Maybe that’s why the video is so faded.

Looking for help mixing a CD

I know there are a lot of music recording folks out there in the PDD community, so I am posting this plea for help.

I participate in a number of drum circles with a dear friend. I had discussed making a CD of some of our sessions for her to send to her sister. My friend has fallen ill, so now time seems to be of the essence.
