This beginner spinning wheel class covers basic principles of the spinning wheel, wool characteristics and how to draft wool, spinning a ‘single’ yarn, wind yarn off on a niddy-noddy and making a 2-ply yarn. Ashley Hise will share her process of throwing, altering and coil building as well as cover glazing techniques for textured surfaces in electric kiln firing. Adam Swanson’s acrylic painting class is intended for painters of all skill levels. Attendees can explore both group and personal projects, learning techniques such as color mixing, glazing and impasto. With hands-on demonstrations, attendees are prompted to create a piece that fits their style. The registration deadline is Dec. 21. Admission is $190 for Duluth Art Institute members, or $220 for non-members. Attendees must be age 16 or older.

Students in this class hollow out a branch, cut a slot in the bottom of the cylinder and snap in a bottom piece. The green wood dries and shrinks around the dry bottom locking it in place.
