Fall Launch Party and Talent Showcase
Life House and Music Resource Center creatives perform a variety of acts to kick off the school year at the Fall Launch Party and Talent Showcase. The MRC is an inclusive program where students in grades 6-12 explore the craft of music through instruction and hands-on experience in music performance, recording and the music business. They have instruments, instructors/coaches, recording equipment, and practice rooms. All skill levels, experience and interests are welcomed.

Open Studio is a flexible space designed for artists to make connections and foster growth in the local art community. Artists are encouraged to bring their artwork in any medium to create in the studio. In this supportive community space, artists can socialize or focus on their creations. Each meeting facilitates an optional group critique at 7 p.m. Artists may also request critique before they work. Scholarships are available. Email [email protected] for more information.

Mary Erickson, a fiber artist with a focus on the landscape, history and people of the MN Iron Ranges will present a program on the Finnish tradition of himmeli and how they are created. She is fascinated by how ethnic traditions carried by immigrants become blended into the American culture. A business meeting for the Lakehead Chapter of the Finnish American Historical Society will be held at 5 p.m. with refreshments following.

The 43rd annual Scandinavian Festival celebrates Scandinavian folk art and entertainment. Visitors can see rosemaling, carving, kolrosing, knitting, hardanger, jewelry, woodenware, lefse and Scandinavian folk art demonstrations. There will also be music and treats. Admission is $5 for adults; children ages 12 and under get in free.

An energetic and interactive theatre experience that explores the quirky characters from the local author's popular children's books. Meet the sneaky sheep Rocky and Blossom, Sasquatch and Squirrel, Cookie the Walker and of course the famous monkey with a tool belt: Chico Bon Bon. The show is best suited for grades K-3. Artist Alison Aune will lead participants in creating unique paintings inspired by traditional kurbit (floral) and bonader (figurative) paintings from central and southern Sweden. Gain an understanding of the history and significance of Swedish folk painting in Minnesota today and new skills in reinterpreting traditional designs into a contemporary context.
