R.I.P. How Sweet it is Cakes

Eileen and Bob Brown are closing How Sweet it is Cakes on Wednesday after more than 20 years in business.

“This has been the most difficult and painful decisions of our lives. Words cannot express our pain and sorrow,” Eileen Brown wrote on the How Sweet it is Cakes Facebook page today.

“There are a number of circumstances that have led up to this decision including but not limited to a significant decline in sales since we’ve moved to our new location, increased cost of product and labor, my and my husband’s health as well as numerous factors that we won’t detail here.”

How Sweet it is Cakes got its start when Eileen Brown began baking custom cakes out of a church kitchen in the late 1990s. In 2010 the Browns their launched their deli and bakery in the Medical Arts Building. They moved the business into the Holiday Center in 2015.

The Browns will continue to fill orders through Sunday, according to the Facebook post. Paid orders from Nov. 6 forward will be paid back in full.

“Our gratefulness cannot be expressed through words alone in how many lives we have been honored and privileged to be a part of,” the Browns wrote. “Weddings, birthdays, engagements, baby announcements … The list goes on.”

How Sweet it is Cakes made Perfect Duluth Day's eleventeenth birthday cake in 2013, which we regret smooshing a bit in its box before getting a good picture. It's an outstanding business I hate to see close.

It was a lovely cake, and I knew I would somehow screw it up before I got it to the party. So I know I took a picture before I smooshed it, but I can't find it now.

The Duluth News Tribune reports Eileen Brown has brought How Sweet it is Cakes to Duluth Grill, offering grab-and-go items from the front of the restaurant and for special order through Duluth Grill's catering business.
