Do I own this star now?

I picked this up in a thrift store. The frame is worth as much as I paid for it — the certificate is a bonus.

This belonged to Len Kovash. It’s a certificate from the International Star Registry renaming a star the “Kovash Family Star.” (Descendants of Kovash, if you need to reference the star, here it is, now, in perpetuity on the internet.)

This has to be the most 1970s thing I have grabbed in the past 10 years.

I don’t think I own this star now. But perhaps I am holding it (online) for someone Googling their ancestors years from now. I’m going to recycle the certificate tonight, though.

I would say you own that star to the exact same degree as the original creators of the certificate.

Kind of amazed this still exists and offers the same certificate today! I think it's like "naming rights"... like a stadium or conference room. Those entities don't "own" the space, they just paid money to name it. Same with the star.
