Selective Focus: Kathy McTavish

Kathy McTavish is a multimedia artist who has been blending technology with art through performance, installations, sound, projections, musical instruments and coding and data input. She has several shows opening this fall. She talks about those shows and the work.

K.M.: I am a trans / media installation artist ::: a cross-sensory composer. Most of my current work is generative / algorithmic ::: multi-threaded code orchestrations. I’m a time-based artist that works with physical spaces.

I started working as a musician / composer primarily with cello & found sound. I also worked in free-improv collaborations with other musicians like Richie Townsend and the Zeitgeist New Music Quartet. Slowly I incorporated time-based visual threads into my live performances and physical installations.

My work has become more algorithmic and generative. I like pouring, torrents, rivers, change. My generative work flows over the cloud / through the web, across glass screens and into physical architectures and streetscapes. Code is a self-activating form of text ::: a digital performance ::: a circuitous score.

I am interested in diverse / multi-threaded / polyphonic systems with all their tumult, friction, resonance, vibrancy and richness. I like open, improvisatory, chance-infused systems. I love webs, networks, loosely-coupled orchestrations.

My queer / dyke / gender-bender self is drawn to the infinite-between ::: to non-binary, cross-sector, trans / media, intersectional, fluid, borderland spaces.

I have a solo show at the Tweed Museum of Art called “Chance” that opens October 19, 2017 and runs through October 28, 2018. Stay tuned for other special events related to that show.

The Joseph Nease Gallery is opening in Duluth this Fall. I am excited to be a part of a three-person inaugural exhibition there called “Three States” with artists Matthew Kluber and James Woodfill on October 21, 2017.

I was invited by artist, astrophysicist and Native Skywatchers director Annette Lee to participate in a traveling group show called “Earth and Sky” that begins October 6, 2017 at the All My Relations gallery in Minneapolis. There are many exciting artists involved in that project. It will be travelling the state throughout 2017 / 2018.

I have many examples of my work also available online.
