Duluth News Tribune: Northland fans remember Prince

To people from Minnesota and surrounding areas, Prince wasn’t just a music icon — he was one of our own.

“He did a lot for Minnesota,” said Duluth resident Julie Yates, who made a request to the city for the Enger Tower tribute after hearing the news of the musician’s death. “It’s a nice tribute. I know people were trying to do stuff down in the Minneapolis area, but I thought it was nice just to know that he influenced the whole state — not just the metro area, but Greater Minnesota, too.”

Yates’ daughter Ruthe Kay, a 16-year-old Duluth blues singer, played with the drummer in Prince’s band, in addition to completing an extended-play album with a producer who worked with Prince early in the singer’s career. They’ve had a large influence on her daughter, she said.
