Gift for Twin Ports resident…

My mom lives in the Twin Ports and I’m trying to think of a good gift card to somewhere/something that I can get for her (I won’t be in town). Does the DECC have gift cards? Any ideas? She isn’t in to spas… Thank you!

My favorite gift card from my daughter is from Barnes & Noble~~~I can go there for browsing and coffee and find a book or magazine (or yummy Godiva chocolate) that I can buy as a special gift from her. Any Duluth bookstore would work for me too, but she has used B&N because she has access to one in her town. Good luck!

Also the DECC does have gift cards, good for event tickets. You have to call 218-727-4344. I think any theatre in town would probably have gift cards, too, if she's in to theatre. There's the dinner theatre at Midi. If it were me, I would definitely prefer experience over product.

I'd consider getting a gift cert from The New Scenic (hands down best restaurant in the area). Depending on her interests, you could get cards/certificates at most businesses. Sivertson Gallery has nice stuff as does Waters of Superior, both in Canal Park. You probably could get one from Northern Waters Smokehaus too for some tasty smoked fish, meat, and lovely cheeses.

If you don't want to support a chain bookstore like B&N, but would rather support your local indie bookstore that has a small but excellent selection of books and sidelines (though no Godiva chocolate, but I think it tastes like plastic anyway), a gift card from Northern Lights Bookstore can be redeemed there or at any other indie bookstore in the USA.

Yes, Barnes and Noble. What an original Duluth institution...

Yes, being despiteful, dear Will, how original. Those damn big chains, so much to hate, being small is a proof of aristocratic goodness or what?
Lucie didn't specify she wanted something local.

The American Booksellers Association's national gift card program is ending soon, so Northern Lights Bookstore's gift cards can only be used at Northern Lights now. But they can order most books in print, so lack of selection is not a reason to avoid them.

Jude, you tell me where your daughter lives, I'll tell you of an indie bookstore where she can redeem a gift card you bought from Northern Lights Bookstore in Canal Park. . .

The Bookstore at Fitgers is also a fantastic bookstore, I enjoy going there, not sure if they have gift cards. I think any local restaurant would make a great gift. Also another idea is a membership for somewhere that someone likes to go. A museum, a rec center, the co-op, etc.

It's kind of hard to know what to suggest without knowing what your mom likes (does she have any hobbies or interests to tailor the gift toward?)...one semi-generic idea is a Duluth Downtown Waterfront Gift Card, which is good at any downtown/Canal Park business that accepts Visa cards.

The hottest ticket in town right now are replica's of the Aerial Lift Bridge made of recycled parts of the bridge. They are made by the MSP artist John Poole and can be purchased at the Marine Museum, and the South Pier Inn. Food gift cards can mostly be purchased online if you're out of the area. Mt. Royal, while often high on prices if you get off the advertised specials, does have different products than the run of the mill and may be a nice Christmas treat for you mom.

The bookstore at Fitgers is indeed amazing, I shop there as well as Northern Lights. They give gift certificates, we just gave our daughter one for Hanukkah -- and she'll get some Northern Lights gift cards at Christmas.

The Wabash Bookstore has gift certificates, too.

Lithis, are you sure the ABA's gift card program's ending soon? I know they've tweaked it, but hadn't heard they were ending it. . .

You can get a copy of "Raisin Cake" at the Fitger's Bookstore. This book is written by Rod Raymond and tells of his lessons learned from his Grandma.

That's gotta be one of the funniest comments in the history of PDD. And I don't even know what "Raisin Cake" is a euphemisim for. (or if it even IS a euphemism?!)

If you go to that link and scroll down, the "Strength and Core" DVD has the greatest cover EVER, considering the recent headlines. Wow.
