Duluth Deep Dive #5: The Life and Times of William Sheldon Storer, Early Duluth Dentist

Dr. Storer came to Duluth from New York in 1893, where he set up practice as a local dentist. This post uses the Duluth Herald archives to recount notable events from his life, including his legal battle with Dr. Laird’s Travelling Medicine Show, his second marriage to a locally renowned German dietitian, and his role in what the original Duluth Rip-saw referred to as the “worst war in the glorious history of Lester Park.”

A Trip to the Dentist

I went to the dentist today, the first day (I think) that Park Dental has been open at its Downtown Duluth location in the Medical Arts Building. There is a Park Dental location near my workplace, but I have an affection for running errands downtown, normally.

Duluth Tooth Puller Runs Amuck in 1903

Making the rounds on Facebook is this New York Times clip from March 5, 1903, reporting events from the morning of March 4, 1903. The Times and some other sources refer to the freelance dentist as “Johnson,” but his name is John Simonson in other accounts.

Free Dental Care

My friend Noland is awesome at using social media to make social services visible. I thought I might boost his signal here.

If anyone is in need of free dental services, there’s a free dental clinic at the DECC on July 17-18. Doors open at 5:30 a.m.; first come, first served. Parking is free.

If you can’t wait for the middle of July, here are some lists of low-cost dental providers throughout Minnesota.

Duluth Dentists

My former dentist retired recently and the dentist who took over his practice seems to me like he’s running a scam.  After a couple of questionable experiences, I won’t be going back.  I have plenty of friends who love their current places, but it seems like those dentists are all on the verge of retirement themselves.  So, I turn now to PDD for advice.  I am seeking a dentist who:

  • Is currently accepting new patients
  • Is not planning on retiring in the next 5-10 years
  • Is good with children
  • Won’t try to scam me on prices or leave my mouth worse off than before I went in

I never understood why people hated going to the dentist until I encountered a true scumbag years ago during an insurance switch.  While most of the dentists I’ve had have been wonderful, I’ve seen the other side, and no sir, I don’t like it!  So tell me please, who makes you smile?
