Inducing the gay and frolicsome lumberjack to stop in Duluth
From the March 22, 1909, Duluth Evening Herald:
Auto ride for drunks
New police patrol will be in service next week
“Free ride with every jag” for every woodsmanDuluth’s new automobile police patrol wagon is due to arrive in the city next Friday. After a few trial trips on local hills, it probably will be put in active service the following Monday.
For several years past certain interests in Duluth have been trying to devise ways and means to induce the gay and frolicsome lumberjack to stop off here and spend his money. (more…)
Russ Kendall’s Smokehouse: A few pre-fire photos of the adjoining bar
The May 11 fire that destroyed the processing area of Russ Kendall’s Smokehouse in Knife River didn’t do much damage to the adjoining bar area, but nonetheless I thought I’d share some pre-fire snapshots I took of it in the fall of 2012, before it got “smoked” … so to speak. (The shot above is obviously of the fire, taken from the smokehouse’s Facebook page.)

Does anyone use Consumer Cellular?
I’m considering switching from Verizon to Consumer Cellular. Does anyone in Duluth use Consumer Cellular? What is your opinion of the company?
This week: books, opera, baseball and roller derby
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
There’s a fundraiser today at Lighthouse at Emily’s for Kendall’s Smokehouse which had a bit too much smoke a few weeks ago and needs to make repairs. If you plan on going farther up the shore, though, be mindful of road restrictions on Highway 61.
The Duluth Public Library Book Sale is this week with a presale for Friends of the Library on Tuesday, then the general public gets to see what’s left on Wednesday. It concludes with a bag sale on Friday.
Duluth Huskies baseball is in full swing this week with four home games Tuesday through Friday at Wade Stadium. In other sports action, the Harbor City Roller Dames have a double header this Saturday at the DECC to conclude their 2013-14 season.
Ring of Fire, featuring the music of Johnny Cash, opens at The Underground on Thursday and runs two weekends and LOON‘s Don Pasquale has only two performances at Lincoln Park Middle School on Thursday and Saturday of this week.
The Formal Age release a new album at Red Star on Friday, sharing the bill with Wino, WI and Turbo Rathvon.

Radar speed signs on Arrowhead and Sixth Avenue East?
What’s up with the “you are going this fast” signs on Sixth Avenue East and Arrowhead Road? I actually quite liked them when they were working. They offered a nice reality check for me and presumably others. They seem to be solar powered; are they both just broken? Are they subscription-based and the city is late on the payment?

Mystery Photo #16: Holm’s Kaffe Stuga
This photo is labeled “Holm’s Kaffe Stuga, Fond du Lac, Duluth, Minn.” From that we can assume the Fond du Lac neighborhood had a Swedish coffee cottage at some time in history. When? Where? And who is this Holm character?
Video Archive: Vikings vs. Eagles in 1978
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fztt8yJ42W4
From Metropolitan Stadium, Dec. 3, 1978. It’s the tail-end of the Purple People Eater years, and many of the Vikings’ top stars are starting to show their age. Nonetheless, the home team comes into this game 7-5-1, with a shot at the playoffs. We’ll save the spoiler remarks until after the jump.

Perfect Duluth Day Outdoor Summer Concert Primer 2014
With one of Duluth’s coldest and snowiest winters behind us, it’s time to warm up for summer music. Venues like Bayfront Festival Park and Big Top Chautauqua host major touring acts throughout summer, along with a number of smaller summer concert series put on by Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center, Summer (Mostly) Thursdays, and Chester Creek Concert Series. There will be more bands to see than time to see them. Here’s a look at some of the summer 2014 highlights.

Chester Park Graffiti?
Has anyone else seen the recent graffiti at the bottom of Chester Park. WDIO had a short feature on it. They “tagged” in the park and the neighborhood including houses and vehicles.
And what does 2.7.5. refer to? Searching the interwebs the top hit is the Twitter handle for @ink2flasyy the 21-year old Ontario man who flipped his car after tweeting about driving drunk. Google also tells me that it could refer to Blackland Raider Klan, an underground rap group started by SpaceGhostPurrp, down in Miami. That or they are big fans of the Python 2.7.5. release. Either way it isn’t cool once you start defacing neighborhoods.
I’ve never had an issue with some of Duluth graffiti havens but the side of an F-150 is not the same as the Graffiti Graveyard.
Seven Bridges Road
There are now survey stakes running through the woods along Seven Bridges Road between Bridge One and Bridge Two. A couple of huge old white pines have been marked with tape. Apparently they are in the way of the plan to move the road over.
This week: polka, herring and berserking

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

Amanda and Rick and the new bike
Yesterday I saw this rain-soaked note clinging to the propane cage outside the Walgreen’s on Superior and 12th…
I thought it was odd enough to post on a well-known social media platform as a curiosity. Then Scott Lunt (aka Starfire) saw it and posted this version of the note he saw on 4th Street… (more…)
