What is Toasty’s on Ninth Street?
Formerly Chet’s (corner store), formally 8th Street Video on 9th (Steve’s), formally 8th Street Video on 9th (mainstream), formally Mean Beans Espresso & Creams is now looking to be something called Toasty’s. Does anyone know what this new venture will reveal itself to be? Will it be a toast joint? It’s a thing I guess.
Giant Water Bug, Outer Harbor by Lakewalk
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlzmqfAOWCI
The Giant Water Bug is among the largest insects in North America. Size was at least 3 inches long. They live around the edges of lakes where they trap air under their wings and dive for small fish and frogs. This mature adult probably overwintered in the mud.

Ummm … seriously? Arby’s is airing a 13-hour Duluth-only commercial?
So, according to this Slate article, not only is Arby’s showing a 13-hour commercial, but it’s only airing in Duluth.
Arby’s is airing 13 straight hours of smoked brisket on television
I checked the date, and it’s not April 1, and I don’t think the NSA has gone so low as to manipulate my poor MacBook Air to fool me.
“Such a delightful time”
July 1909 — Seven billion gallons of water falls on the Duluth area in two days. Grass, trees, timbers, paving blocks, mud and debris are washed down the city’s hillside during the torrential rainfall. Two children drown after being swept out of their mother’s arms.
Within two weeks a postcard is made, and the mood on the back doesn’t quite seem to fit the mood on the front.

After 20 years …
Go see my friends at Lake Superior Brewing this weekend. As part of their 20th anniversary celebration, they have finally opened up a Tap Room at their West End location (corner of Superior Street and 27th Avenue West, behind Subway).
Abandoned places to see
Does anyone happen to know where these abandoned, yet beautiful, spots are? If you have some of your own, feel free to share pictures and locations so everyone can enjoy. There is a lot of little secrets along the North Shore like these.

Solon Springs native Christine Rapsys moved from Duluth to Los Angeles and, one year later, joined with co-writer/co-director Christine Dennis to produce this dramatic short film. The story follows Maya, a young woman whose best friend, Zoe, dies tragically in an unexpected accident.
Wind Song was on the Duluth Superior Film Festival schedule, but the screening has apparently been cancelled.
This week: honey, spirits and fashion
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Take It With You is a live variety show taped for podcasting and the second episode is happening at The Underground on Tuesday with guests singer/songwriter Brianna Lane, Lake Superior Honey Company owner/operator Jonathan Otis and mayor/guy-about-town Don Ness.
The Duluth Farmers Market is open again on Wednesdays and Saturdays, which raises the perennial question, should a market for farmers be a “Farmers Market,” a “Farmer’s Market” or a “Farmers’ Market.” I think the middle one is right out, unless it’s just one farmer. Share your thoughts in the comments.
If you think your media needs to get more social and you like to confer, you’re in luck. The Zenith Social Media Marketing Conference is at Greysolon Plaza on Thursday.
Local theater and film costumer, Sasha Howell, is staging her first fashion show, Spectacle, on Friday at The Underground. Sasha says her style is influenced by steampunk, Burning Man, Lisa Frank and horror.
Vikre Distillery in Canal Park is having its Grand Opening this Saturday and Sunday with tours and samples.
So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.
Duluth Mystery Photo #15: Honor Brand
This photo from 1910 depicts “Mrs. Goldsmith and associates ready to demonstrate Honor Brand pure food products at the Pure Food Show, Duluth.” That tells us quite a bit, but here’s the question(s): Where was the Pure Food Show held? What is the location of this photo? Is it an existing building or long-demolished one? Does anyone recognize that ceiling?

Wheat/gluten-free Duluth brews?
As someone recently diagnosed with a wheat allergy, the world of local beer has become a mysterious place. Information on ingredients is sketchy at best on the interwebs. Does anyone have any first-hand knowledge if any of our local breweries offer any wheat-free or gluten-free beers? Suggestions would be most appreciated!
Minnesota paves moral high path on bill designed to compete with other leading drug companies
In a move sure to stun future generations while staying true to his Lutheran and Epsilon roots, the Minnesota house and senate led by Governor Mark Dayton, winning the big one for his home team, finally signed into law a bill sponsored by Hibbing’s very own Carly Melin, a fine example of Range woman herself, attractive and learned, also with probable Scandinavian and German heritage, with neither of them having ever had any actual experiences or contact with the Cannabis plant themselves, on their persons or with any of their families or friends therein … (more…)
Funding secured for Wade Stadium, Spirit Mountain and NorShor
The state bonding bill that passed the Minnesota Senate today includes funding for Wade Stadium and NorShor Theatre renovation, and construction of a water-delivery system for Spirit Mountain.
“Restoring Wade Stadium will ensure the iconic ball field will continue to be enjoyed by players and fans for decades to come,” Duluth Mayor Don Ness said in a news release. “The Spirit Mountain water project will allow the ski hill to get off of the city’s treated water, saving money and opening up other potential development in the western part of town. The NorShor Theatre & Arts Center will serve as a catalyst for new development in old downtown.”
