Writer Katie Perttunen teaches writing within six weeks at Foundations of Flash Fiction. Perttunen has published two books, written for three newspapers and was the poetry editor for an online literary magazine. This class is best for ages 12 and older and is for both experienced and beginner writers. Participants will need to bring paper, writing implements and the book "Elements of Style".

The art of storytelling and listening for Mother's day is hosted by SOCLCA. Mothers and their tweens and teens are welcome to attend for a little writing workshop and will leave with a Mother's Day keepsake. Focus on the fundamental building blocks of storytelling at the Duluth Folk School. Look at genre and literary fiction to find your voice within. After examining examples, you will have a variety of prompts to craft your own personal narrative. The McKnight Foundation and UMD Department of American Indian Studies sponsor the series. Staci Lola Drouillard lives and works in her hometown of Kitchibitobig — Grand Marais. Her first book for adults, Walking the Old Road: A People’s History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe, won the Hamlin Garland Prize in Popular History, the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award for nonfiction and was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award.

Through reading examples of each, the group can gain a better understanding of what works, what doesn’t, and why. Meet Cheri Johnson who will be at Zenith Bookstore signing copies of her new book Annika Rose. Johnson has won grants and residencies from organizations such as the McKnight Foundation, the Bush Foundation, Yaddo and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.
